Through Twitter I was informed about a site called QIK, basically you can record a video of your holiday with your mobile phone, and it’s streamed live on the site. So potentially, you could get your family and friends to watch snippets of video from your holiday as it happens.

Watch your family and friends on holiday

This morning I was able to watch a live video of a family on the beach in Australia, and the Sunburst music festival in Kuala Lumpur. Personally, I’m not sure I would like to my family and friends watching me on my travels; to get away from life back home is one of the reasons why I go on holiday.

Do you think this technology would be useful to the industry or holidaymakers?

I am a geek, but I have had so much fun playing with Yahoo Pipes that I wanted to show you how powerful it can be, especially if you integrate it with Google Maps, and the street view tool. As you can see from the example below is of the Millennium Hilton Hotel in New York.

Yahoo Pipes and Google Maps for Trip planning

Using Yahoo pipes I aggregated data from Yahoo local to find hotels and restaurants within 5 miles of New York. I was then able to create an KML file that was uploaded to my server and then added to Google Map.

Using Google Street view I then chose a hotel and clicked on the street within the map, this then published an image of the street and as you can see the hotel. To view it live just click here and have a play around for yourself.

I should really go to bed but for some reason I have my writing head on even though I have to be up in five hours for the ‘full-time’ job. Anyway, the news this week that Apple are launching a new look iPod touch has me all excited.

What's Your Favorite Travel Gadget?

Not only does it look ultra cool, but it has WiFi, which means I can surf the net on the move.. Most of you probably use your iPod primarily to listen to music, but I find it useful when I am going away on my travels.

I download a few audio travel guides and video guides on the destination, so whilst I am sat on the plane, I can plan what I want to go see whilst I am there. In addition to my iPod I always take my Fujifilm Digital SLR camera because I love taking photographs.

What gadgets do you take on your holidays or do you prefer to travel light?

Over the last couple of years Airlines have become much stricter on baggage allowances, and this week I’ve been looking around for baggage that will securely store my passport, foreign currency, and my new digital SLR style camera and equipment.

Introducing Think Tank Photo Gear

Then by magic I receive an email from Think Tank Photo informing me of the new rolling carry-on backpack called Airport International that lets photographers legally store their bodies [not human bodies!!] lenses, and accessories in overhead bins or under the seats of aircraft.

Product designer, Doug Murdoch told me

… we’ve listened to photographer fears and designed in strong, customizable features that allow them to use this rolling camera bag not only as a means of transporting equipment from one site to the next… As it is a roller, photographers can move from quickly from one flight to the next and without the burden of carrying this weight on their shoulders.

The Airport International is the latest addition to Think Tank Photo’s exclusive line of rollers, backpacks, and briefcases specifically designed to aid photographers in transporting their gear safely through airports and into the field - Think Tank Photo gear is available in the UK through Snapper Stuff.

Great video featuring travel gadgets covered at the 40th Annual Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas thanks to my good friends at Travelistic. The new Kodak camera’s look pretty nifty, but you can bet it’ll be a few months before they are available in the UK - I liked the look of the lingo gadgets too.

Great video – loved it, and perfect picture too. Keep up the great work Travelistic!

I love my gadgets, and especially gadgets I can take away with me on my travels. My trusty Apple iPod has been on holiday with me all over the world and comes in handy when I’m laying on the beach relaxing, or sat on a bus taking in the sights and scenery.

Tell me about your Travel Gadgets

For the past five years my Sony Cybershot digital camera has spent a lot of time travelling with me, but I have recently upgrade this for a Fujifilm S9500 SLR style digital camera. I’m always on the lookout for travel gadgets so what items do you take with you on your travels?

Good news for iPod owners with the news that Apple is working with six airlines who plan to offer iPod seat connections to power and charge the devices, and to show video stored in the iPod on a seat back display.

The airlines are Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United. The services will be available in mid-2007. I am also reliably informed that Apple is working with Panasonic, to tempt more airlines to offer iPod services on board.

Emails are flying into my inbox lately and today was no exception with an email from Thorvald Stigsen, CEO of Momondo, who in September 2006 launched the Momondo.com flight search engine.

Momondo.com launch European flight search engine

Momondo.com submits your request to all relevant websites in Europe: low-cost carriers, national carriers and a selection of on-line travel agencies. Momondo makes an actual price comparison between the 600+ airlines in Momondo’s network.

Thorvald told me that..

Momondo has visitors from all across Europe. Consequently this autumn we launch a shared blogspot where both visitors and the Momondo team can share experiences and recommendations from the cities they have a particular insight into. And the cities they love. Our objective is to make Momondo.com the starting point of your European exploration.

I found the search very easy to use and the website design is very web2.0 – a search for a flight to Alicante, Spain, brought me results from various airline carriers, where I could then choose the best / cheapest flight, and I was then redirected to the airlines website to make the booking.
