Every day I receive a bunch of emails from readers asking travel consumer questions, so I thought I would mention a few of them on the blog along with my reply. At the moment I am receiving a lot of questions on travel insurance, and I am not surprised, it can be confusing for holidaymakers.

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
Here’s a question from one Travel Rants reader
I took out travel insurance about 6 months ago and one of the questions was have I ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure. At that time I had not but within the last month my doctor informs me I do have high blood pressure. I am not taking any medication for it. Do you think I should inform the travel insurance company since my holiday is in June 2011?
Don’t take risks with medical conditions
In this situation I asked the reader to read the policy small print and then give the travel insurance company a call and explain the situation. The last thing you want to happen is to go on holiday, become ill, and then find out you are not covered for any medical expenses.
The European Health Insurance card will offer some support within the EU, but it is still important to take out travel insurance when travelling abroad. I have heard of stories where holidaymakers have gone to EU countries like Spain and still found themselves with a bill to pay for medical treatment.

I have been a nurse for some 30years, If I was you I would inform your travel insurance company about your BP, even though you are not on any medication. They might increase your excess but its a small price to pay. Get the name of the person you speak to and if they are any good they should get back to you in writing. Always keep yourself covered, you may never need it but its nice to be able to pull out the paperwork.

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions. I live in Finland and dont speak finnish. Free credit card insurance was great but now my husband has MG everything was bought DIY (no agents only web direct) for USA, some insurance does not cover this if we cancel. Many sites only sell this specific insurance for USA or UK residents only. I am struggling to find english insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions.
