Looking back it has been a year full of travel issues. There was the threat of British Airways cabin crew strikes, flight cancellations due to the volcano ash clouds, the collapse of more travel companies and let us not forget the recent debacle at Heathrow airport due to the bad weather.

What have been your worst travel experiences of 2010?

A year to forget for travellers

My own worst travel experiences includes a cancelled trip to Paris, and getting stranded and having to find my own way home from Holland. It has been a year to forget for travellers and a year for the travel industry to learn from their mistakes – but will they? Probably not.

What have been your worst travel experiences of 2010?

Getting the ‘Megabus’ from Preston to London. 8 hours on a bus stinking of piss and sick.

Still, what can you expect for £14 return!

Worst? Probably that I’ve not travelled much at all this year.

But as far as actual travel experiences, the new TSA screening rules take the cake. A close second would be air travel in general, I’m not sure how they managed, but it’s gotten worse. All those little stressors cause a lot of people to be in a horrible mood, and it colours the whole experience for me now.

Lesson for next year: Take the train!

As usual, it was traveling in the US. In February I decided to take in an air show conference in Niagara Falls, NY. I had a business trip the next day so I flew from Buffalo to Detroit to Memphis (love the hub and spoke – NOT!!)

On the return the best I could get was MEM to CLT to PHL to BUF. Plane late leaving Memphis, missed the connection in Charlotte by 5 minutes. Uncomfortable night sleeping on the terminal floor.

I know this is nothing compared to what’s been going on lately but you wanted our personal worst.

Ooh that doesn’t sound good. My travel experiences for 2010 were on the whole ok, the worst thing that happened to me was my suitcase being lost at Madrid airport and then having to wait for days for it to be flown home. Not good!!

After months of convincing my Swedish and Canadian friends that not all Australians were backward and racist, we encountered a burnt out jockey in a hostel in Melbourne. The guy had the best part of a bottle of vodka and proceeded to mortify my friends with a long rant about why anyone who isn’t white is not a “real” Australian, before passing out on the couch with his hands down his pants. Mortifying.

My worst travel experience in 2010 was a train journey in India. I was sharing my seat with another woman for 24 hours. The train was full with people and I was lucky enough to have a seat even though I had to share it. At the time I was not happy at all. Looking back, it’s a great story. It’s a journey I will not forget.
