Its 2010 which means I am in my fifth year of writing Travel Rants and I am out enjoying myself, celebrating a new year. It has been an odd year for me because while they are many positives to write about, the libel issue that I found myself in left a rather bad taste in the mouth.

Reflection on a year; Libel case, TV appearance, a community

Libel issue left me bruised but not out

At the time I was on the verge of closing the blog and moving on to pastures new but I decided to give myself six months to see how things worked out. Those six months have just come to an end and I think that Travel Rants still has a part to play in the travel industry.

Thankfully, I have found that people have been so supportive and it’s time to look forward to a new year.

Proud to be part of a great community

I sit back and look at what I have achieved, but that would not be possible without this great community. I want to thank every single one of you who have joined in the discussions. Especially to those that have been on here in the early hours answering consumer’s questions in difficult times.

Just before Christmas I was sat here reading comment’s, people worried about their holiday, newlyweds going on honeymoon, family holidays ruined, my fantastic readers and I were here to help, that made me so proud and it’s at that point that I realised I had to continue with this blog.

I still have that passion and fire in my belly.

Achievements in 2009

Mentions in the national press, nominated for awards by Lonely Planet and Travolution, recognition from the travel industry by the likes of Cheapflights and Lastminute.com and my appearance on BBC television and radio, yes a great year, but many more goals to achieve in 2010.

New Year, new goals and challenges

One of my goals this year is to use this blog to help the industry deal with big issues like holiday protection, yes, I do write about the negative aspects of travel but I think consumers, like me, have a role to play in making the industry better and that is why I write this blog.

New personal challenges

One of my biggest challenges outside of blogging is to lead a healthier lifestyle, I also want to do some fundraising and walk across part of the Great Wall of China, more on that soon. Regular readers will know that I work full-time, and run this blog in my spare time, that will hopefully change.

I wish you all the best for the coming year and here’s hoping that it is a healthy one for you all.

Darren:
I am apparently woefully behind the times because I did not know you were suffering through a libel suit. So sorry for your troubles. You didn’t say if they have been resolved but I am hoping so. Wishing you a wonderful 2010 -hey, maybe we’ll finally meet in China! I’m planning to be there in the fall.

Happy New Year! Yes, thankfully, the libel case is over with. A nasty experience that I would not want anyone to go through. Long story but we settled in the end; out of pocket, but massive lessons learnt. I’ll be in China in September 2010 (hopefully!) I need to do a lot of hard work beforehand.

Wow, what a year! Congrats to all those achievements, especially creating a community that makes such a difference. Definitely glad to see you didn’t give up on the site! Here’s for more of the same successes in 2010!

I’m glad you decided to stick with it. The travel industry desperately needs its consumer advocates and I love that you are always writing from a place of passion – it’s very authentic and I think that’s what people respond to.

@ Joanna

I think writing these types of posts puts it all in parspective really. You don’t really realise what you’ve achieved until you put it all down. Thanks for dropping by and commenting and I hope 2010 is everything you want it to be!

@ Caitlin

Thanks, yes, I think once that passion goes, it’ll be then I’ll know that its time to end, but at the moment, there’s so many consumer issues that need addressing, companies still going into administration (sadly) and I want to be here to help those who are looking for advice.
All the best for you for 2010!

Happy New Year, to me your one of the travel industries best voices (as a consumer). You things to the public eye, listen to what said and learn from it. I enjoy your blog and am not even reluctant when I look at 23:00 or 06:00 to start looking up answers to problems.

Keep up the good work.

So glad you’ve not given up – hopefully your setback will soon be put behind you and be a dim memory. Keep up the good work and I’ll be interested in seeing how things develop once you have more time for the blog

@ Rob

Thank you. I’m looking forward to recording more podcasts in 2010!

@ Heather

Thanks Heather, well I will be spending that time concentrating on this blog, the Leeds site and organising a few small travel events this year. I have a learning camp that I am organising for next month in Leeds, which should keep me busy.

Libel? I didn’t know about that either. That’s terrible. So glad it is behind you now and you can look ahead to 2010.

Thank you. Yes, it was a worrying time, but thankfully we settled out of court in the end and I have learnt a lot of lessons from it. Here’s hoping to a great 2010 for all of us.

Would be curious to hear about the lessons you learned. Does the experience impact what or how you are able to write?

@ JJ

The libel issue wasn’t because of something I wrote, it was a comment that I published from a third party. The content hasn’t changed, I have never ranted against specific companies, more generic consumer issues, and they are plenty of those. The lessons learnt are more around moderating a popular community, and putting processes in place so that people can report comments.

Happy New Year!

Like Barbara, I missed the libel suit. I’m happy to hear you decided to stick with the blog though. There’s obviously a need and appreciation for a travel consumer blog like Travel Rants.
