It has been a week full of travel consumer issues and news and rather than writing a blog post reflecting I decided to record my first 5-minute travel rant podcast. Every so often I will publish a podcast for readers to listen to. Hopefully my editing skills will improve.

The 5 minute travel rants podcast

Travel posts discussed

Eurostar passengers trapped and now cancellations
Libra and Argo Holidays in administration
FlyGlobespan flies into administration
BA strike advice and information

You should be able to download the podcast from the iTunes library soon, but in the meantime please let me know what you think of the podcast, what you would like me to feature in future episodes. More importantly tell me if you agree or disagree with any of the points that I raised in the podcast.

@ Rob

Thanks, going to try and keep future ones to 5 minutes so people don’t get bored too much! I have a few people lined up to partner on future podcasts. I’m just testing another media to see if it takes off and people enjoy it.

Darren,

I’m not a guy who’s in favor of podcasts or videos. It takes me too much time. Especially if you put jingles in between.

So I rather read your concise and well and clear written posts:-)

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I realise not everyone will like the podcast(s) but, it is just another media to talk about travel consumer issues. Some people might prefer the podcasts, some like you will prefer to read the blog posts.

To be honest this didnt take a lot of time to record and edit, but I’ll see how it goes in the future, I am just testing it really. Cheers

Travelrants goes multi-media! Bravo! Sorry Guido, I agree that video & podcasts take a lot longer than a quick blog post, but I believe the bloggers who stand out in the future will be the ones that use all mediums, podcasts, video, photography, words. It helps you appeal to a much wider audience, but I guess not everyone can afford the time it takes.

I think the 5 min podcast is a useful extension for your current audience, but if you want to get the audience that is really into podcasts via I-tunes & Podcast Directories, you probably need to do something a bit longer to make it worth downloading. That would perhaps bring you a new audience over time.

Thanks Heather. I think anything more than 10 minutes would bore most people because of the topics that I am going to be discussing on the podcast. I plan to have a one or two interviews, which will stretch the podcast to 10 minutes, but, ones that I am recording on my own will be 5/6 minutes max.

Nice to put face and voice together. I actually like the multimedia effort here. We usually listen to podcasts while on the road although listened to this in the living room. We like this a lot. Looking forward to more of these.

Think the jingle is a bit long- I like to just get to the meat of the content.. nice job!

I agree it’s great to hear your voice – and no worries your spoken English goes down perfectly well even for foreigners.

It’s up to you if you feel good with this or not. @garyvee says everyone has to find the medium that is best convenient for them. For him it’s video, because he claims he’s not good at writing. You choose your tools.

Thanks. I agree you have to be comfortable with it. I couldn’t do video, and I think Gary makes a really good point about you choose the tools you feel comfortable with. Have you read his book ‘Crush’? If you havent you should. Great book.

Well, yes I’ve read the book and honestly for me it’s 99% vaporware. Stuff that you and I have known for years. But it’s certainly good, energetic vaporware.

I agree that they were some bits that I know, but it is good to see how he has used it within his business. The energy was the bit that stood out for me though. Gave me a kick and helped me put some thought into the direction I want to take this blog.

I agree the multi-media approach is a good one so that your visitors can choose their preferred medium. I think that, for the next one, sub-titles for those of us in the south of England would be useful ;-) In-joke for the Brits. Seriously, I think you did an excellent job. Very well delivered: you are obviously a natural.

BTW it was indeed a crazy week in travel; and we must keep hammering home the message that those travelling by air from the UK should ensure they are ATOL protected.

Haha thanks! The Yorkshire accent was worrying me a little, but like my ranting I am sure people will get used to it! I have a few ideas for future podcasts.

Darren: I have read your blog for over two years and it is fantastic to hear your voice. The passion really shines through. Loved listening. It wasn’t too short and not too long, just perfect timing.

I am looking forward to the next podcast.

Agree with you Darren – what a week !
Liked the podcast, only bit I didn’t like was the “jingle”

@ Olli

Thanks for the feedback. I quite like the jingle, it felt ranty, but the podcast is still very much “in development” so it’ll hopefully be improving all the time.

Hi Darren – it was my pleasure! There’s a live link on my blog to the content now, but the actual newspaper makes the content available only in print or to its paid online subscribers. Julie
