I just wanted to quickly write about the news that low cost airline Sky Europe has suspended its services this morning. I will write more about this later today, but if you have been affected by this please leave your questions or thoughts in the comments section.

SkyEurope files for bankruptcy and suspends flights

Confusing message

The word ‘suspend’ instantly confused me because suspend to me means “render temporarily ineffective” or at least that’s what the dictionary says. So does this mean that flights will resume at some point, or does it mean, you’ve had it, SkyEurope will never fly again.

Information on the website

The information on the website is pretty basic; if you have booked with a credit card, and the flight is over £100 then you’ll be protected and should get your money back. If you booked with a debit card, bank transfer then you will be lucky to get it back.

I think it’s a Visa debit card where you might be protected, but it’ll be up to the bank I guess.

You might want to contact your travel insurance provider, as your flight might be covered through scheduled airline insurance, but check the small-print. I am unsure if you have booked with an ATOL travel agent this means you’ll be protected, maybe someone could confirm that for me.

Really helpful SkyEurope

This bit annoyed me. If you are already at the destination or have rented a car through Sky Europe’s business partner, you may stay at the hotel and use the vehicle during the period originally agreed. You must, however, order a return flight from some other airline at your own expense.

Eh. Thanks for nothing Sky Europe!

I wonder if this is the first low-cost airline to go bust in the last quarter of 2009.

“Do you think this is the first of many low-cost airlines to go under this winter?”

We are not in winter yet Darren. They went bust during busy summer months!!

Darren

And this is why the government say’s that they do not need protect your money! I know a lot of people moan but at least ATOL would have got you home, and refund you if needed. But of course consumers do not want to pay a £1, the government says so. But this is the same government that charges you £10 – £60 for doing…..errr……well…errr…nothing!
