Earlier in the year, I launched the travel rants blog carnival, where we highlighted the best travel content. Hundreds of people participated, and I think it kick-started travel bloggers getting involved in the carnival fever we see today. Since then it has become a monthly feature here on travel rants.

It’s the end of 2008, so what better way to end the year off than to highlight the best blog posts. I asked my friends on Twitter and StumbleUpon to help me out in this endeavour, so here you have it the absolute best travel blog posts of 2008.
Please remove your breasts from the plane
Just when you thought it could not get anymore stupid onboard an airplane, I mean which idiot decided to allow passengers to use mobile phones and laptops in-flight. It gets worse when a lady breast feeding her hungry baby is told to stop because it’s making other passengers feel uncomfortable.
XL – dealing with the aftermath
I love ranting about travel agencies and to be honest they deserve most of the flack I send their way, but for a change I have to say I am impressed with how they dealt with the aftermath of the collapse of the UK’s third largest tour operator, and here’s one example of a company jumping into action.
Queuing madness when travelling
I’m impatient, I hate queuing, it’s one thing that makes me want to rant, but Graham, the writer of this blog post did the ranting for me earlier in the year when he bemoaned why he had to spend so much time queuing at the airport, then the hotel, then waiting for public transport, yes I hate queues too.
Top 10 snowboarding mountains in the US and Canada
As a community we created our beginners tips to Skiing, and that has become a popular post with travellers looking for information skiing, so now you have some tips, how about hitting the best snowing boarding mountains in the US and Canada.
Travel tips from a flight attendant
You’ve got to feel for the flight attendant who has to deal with all sorts of strange and wonderful air passengers, so it was interesting to read some tips to help passengers get the best out of their flight experience. I’m not sure about the string cheese, but there are some great tips for your next flight.
How to do extended travel and mini retirements
We would all love to retire early or have an extended holiday, I know I would, well the Soultravelers3 gang have written a great guide to taking an extended holiday, and provide some good tips, with links through to some useful books and blogs that will help you.
French Swear Words: My 10 Favourites
I wouldn’t advise against using these words in public, but I must admit I could have done with knowing one or two of these on my first and probably final trip every to Paris. In 2006, I took a weekend trip there, and whilst I found the city to be beautiful, the locals were arrogant and bloody rude.
I remember walking into my apartment in Benidorm and I saw this “second toilet” and thought what the hell is that. I soon realised it was this thing they call a bidet, where you wash your bits and feet, but I never knew they were so many different uses – my favourite is the beer cooler, hilarious.
24 Super Healthy Eats and Drinks For 2009
One of my goals for 2009, is to eat healthier, take more exercise and lose some weight, so this post was added straight onto my bookmarks when I found it in my RSS feed reader earlier in the week, a good post that highlights healthy eats and drinks.
Does travel really matter anyway
A good question, and despite the economic downturn it seems consumers are still wanting their annual holiday – I have to admit I would hate not to be able to go on holiday. This post gets some quotes from bloggers and online publishers on why travel matters.
So, which post would you vote for as best blog post for 2008.

I love Kim’s “Why travel matters” post because, well, first, it answers the question and secondly, it does so in a time when travel is really suffering from being seen as a luxury. Hard times make why travel matters all that more critical.

Great round up. ‘Does travel really matter’ gets my vote.

The breast-feeding story has to be the most ridiculous. I saw a woman kicked out of a public library for breast-feeding a few years ago. I’d like to think that we can all be grown-ups about something natural. Do we want childs drinking chemical-filled milks instead?
Reminds me of a story I read about companies sending packed milk supplies to new mothers across Africa who could barely afford food and shelter. Breast-feeding is basically free

Thanks for including me in your list Darren. I’m certainly amongst good company with the posts that you’ve chosen. I’ve got to vote for the “Does travel really matter anyway” post. I’ve had very similar thoughts as those expressed in the post, and it covered a topical subject quite well.

Thanks for the praise over XL; you’re a hard man to please. As I posted at the time we protected all XL’s group passengers who booked with us including those who fell outside of ATOL. Unfortunately this is now 2009 and we can no longer protect passengers outside of ATOL’s as the government has made this illegal. We can now refer customers to an insurance provider but as of today we have yet to find one that is willing. As a travel agent we always try our best for our customers however more regulation is making this harder and leading to problems.

Haha very funny post. As Andy mentioned, bidet and breast in the same breath is unheard of, very entertaining thank you.

Love the post Darren. I am shocked at the action of the airline regarding breast feeding, that is quite shocking. The bidet post made me laugh too. Thanks for highlighting new travel blogs too.
