During the World Travel Market I wandered around the exhibitions and struck up a conversation with a few people. I was shocked to find that despite it being two years since my last visit, people were still not aware of what great content is out there, written on blogs.

Here is my list of 15 blogs that I think all travel companies should read, in no particular order.
• SEOmoz
• Travolution
• Hotel Blogs
• Business of Online Travel
• Search Engine Land
• Travel Weekly
• Tracking Tourism
• Hitwise
• T4 Blog
• E-consultancy
• Enviro Aero
• Musings on Travel Ecommerce
• Elliott
• Hotelitour
• Plagiarism Today
I have over 300 blog RSS feeds, so I cannot feature every blog. For that reason I am happy for bloggers to leave a link to their blog in the comments, but I want to know why you think travel companies should read your blog.
Hopefully, this post will highlight a few blogs that you were not aware of.

Hey Darren, thanks for another opportunity to discuss the online travel-scape.
With 2/3 of business and personal travel being planned exclusively online, it’s important for everyone in tourism to know what’s going on – online.
I care about tourism businesses and know their perspectives because I operate one. For over a decade we’ve been developing web marketing strategies exclusively online for our tourism business http://northernedgealgonquin.com.
At http://www.tourismkeys.ca/blog I provide first hand advice on blog posts and podcasts on topics that matter to the industry trying to understand Web marketing. I just share what works. Many readers have increased their revenue based on what they have learned, some 10’s of thousands of dollars!
With so much free access to markets on the Web, the biggest shift the industry needs to make is to shift money from paying for placement, to paying for content.
So, I’d say folks should give Tourism Keys a listen or a read if they:
don’t have money to spend on marketing
don’t have time to spend on marketing
want to know what they can do today to make their phone ring.
Keep up the good work Darren.

@ Todd
I have just recently started to read your blog, and I love the podcasts! I hope to get my podcast out there and live early 2009. Having a few technical problems at the moment with my old laptop!
@ Andy
Of course, Travel Rants is a must read

Hi Darren,
I think travel companies should read the “What a Trip” blog at http://www.Nancydbrown.com for several reasons:
As a travel writer and blogger I attend conferences such as Luxury Travel Expo, Travel Writers conderences and blogger conferences to keep up on industry trends and share them with my readers.
As a newspaper travel columnist, I share my travel articles on the “What a Trip” blog so that travel companies can see where the luxury traveler is headed.
I have mentioned Twitter on my “What a Trip” blog. If a travel company is not familiar with Twitter, I recommend they visit http://www.twitter.com and follow travel writers for great travel tips.

HI Darren
Thanks for the list – there were a couple here I did not know about – great additions to my ever increasing list!
Josh | 15 December, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Darren, thanks for the list. I’m sure it will prove invaluable.

Darren, thanks for the list as it was really a good source.
Sandwagon | 16 December, 2008 at 10:15 am
Interesting list, Darren. And if the industry can make time to get to grips with the industry insight held in blogs, I’m sure they will reap the rewards.
I’d really like to see an authoritative blog about responsible travel on that list. Any ideas?
Andrew | 16 December, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Excellent list, I completely agree, I bet most travel companies don’t read these blogs, especially the SEO related blogs!
Guillaume | 16 December, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Hi Darren,
Thanks for choosing Hotel Blogs as the “must read” blogs for the travel industry. After Elliott and you now, I get new readers. That’s fantastic. I also discover new blogs. Even better.
Cheers,
Guillaume

Hi Darren,
Thanks for listing http://www.enviro.aero on your round-up of travel industry blogs. We are very happy with the way that enviro.aero has taken off and, in the new year, look forward to playing a bigger role in creating discussion between the aviation industry and the wider travel sector about some of the things we are doing to reduce our environmental footprint.
All the best for 2009!

I have a blog – http://www.flyerblogs.com that is focused on business air commuters on long distance runs. These people are spending $1000’s/week on travel and are true frequent flyers. I have a community of several hundred businessmen and women who (this is true) commute from Israel to the US (mainly to NY) on a weekly basis.
These people have many concerns very specific to their needs and the industry might want to listen. One timely post was about Air Canada Jazz removing life vests from their flights to save fuel. Fortunately, USAir did not chose that method of weight reduction.
