Carrying on my series of posts on ‘Five things I hate..’ in travel, today, I am focusing on hotels. A lot of what annoys me about hotels is due to the standard of the hotel that I can afford to stay in, but we don’t all have the money to spend on four or five star luxury hotels.

Paying for breakfast
What happened with paying for a hotel room, and it included breakfast. I do not mind if it’s continental or English breakfast. I am not fussy, I just want something to eat to get me going in the morning. Very few hotels now include breakfast.
No WiFi access
Broadband is relatively cheap nowadays, so it baffles me why not all hotels have WiFi access, if it’s free, that’s great but if I have to pay a nominal fee, I am not bothered. I disagree with paying £1 for 10 minutes internet access on those crappy Spectrum booths.
Thin walls
There’s nothing worse than being woken up at 5am by people in neighbouring rooms, or worse still by hotel staff. I hate hotels with thin walls, you can hear your neighbours talk, snore and flushing of the toilet. There should be a standard thickness of walls, or some sort of sound proofing.
Paying for room service
I absolutely hate paying for room service – to be honest, I don’t visit many hotels where room service is available nowadays, which is just as annoying. I remember looking in the menu at the Kensington Hotel in London, and found a charge of £4 for room service.
Dirty hotel rooms
It should not matter if it’s a basic 2 star or luxury 5 star hotel, the room should always be clean. There’s no excuse really. I hate hotel rooms where you find muck in the bath or shower, body hairs in between the bed covers and mucky windows which you cannot see out of.
I am interested to what you hate about hotels.

Non-smoking rooms that used to be smoking rooms rank pretty high on my list, along with hotels that don’t deliver what they promise on their website (e.g site says pool/sauna, but property never had one in the first place).

When a hotel says that towels are provided and when you turn up they are, but they are the size of a flannel. GIVE ME A DECENT SIZED TOWEL !!

I hate the way they pin down the end of the bedding so you can’t get your feet in. Seriously though, the main thing I don’t like is the way hotels treat some of their guests differently according to the amount they have paid. There is also a horrible pampering to celebrities and “names” in the hotel world that leaves a nasty taste. I have been in hotels that have been virtually closed to everyone else because a “name” has been staying.

Staying in hotels when they are at full capacity at peak times. When the staff are clearly stretched and the guests are rude and start to rant and create a mexican wave of tutting and finger pointing.

I would go with out of date information on hotel websites. Do not put up 20 year old photos or say things like bus stop 200 meters when it move 1km away 3 years ago.
Hotel breakfasts, must be the hotels I stay in I always seem to get breakfast and hot breakfasts are always poor, in saying that cold buffets are normally very good.

Darren, dirty hotel rooms, what about the hotel in Oslo?

I hate dirty rooms. One guy once told me, “Well, you should have looked at the room first.” I said, “YOU should have looked at the room first.” I hate really expensive rooms such as those at the Grand Canyon’s El Tovar where they tried to charge us $95 for a basement room without a window or tv and so small two people couldn’t walk across it at the same time. When I got my money back, she said, “Yeah, we get a lot of that.” I hate clerks in the US who don’t speak English. LEARN THE LANGUAGE. I hate the attitude that they’re doing US a favor. And I hate when it’s supposed to be non-smoking when it absolutely REEKS of urine and/or cigarettes.

I hate:
thin walls and door jams that don’t block out sound/light.
curtains that don’t block light.
doors that don’t lock securely when the cleaning people shut them.
showers that only work on cold and burning.

This is a small pet peeve, but I encounter it in almost every hotel (except in the U.K. and Ireland, bless them). Somewhere in the room I’ll usually find a coffee maker, packets of coffee and sugar, and a selection of tea bags. Sometimes the teas look lovely. But very rarely is there a kettle. No matter how you make it, water heated in a coffee maker always tastes like, well, coffee. Which is fine if you want coffee, but annoying if you’re trying to make tea.

I hate when the cleaning staff call to clean the room at like 9am, they knock the door as they are walking in. I am on holiday, sometimes I like a lie in, and not to be ready and out of the room by 9am. The times I have been in bed sleeping, or walking around half dressed, when they have barged in!!! Sometimes this is even when the ‘do not disturb’ sign is on the door!!! It leaves me feeling a bit on edge if I am in a hotel on my own, as you are never quite sure you wont be walked in on. Whats room with a tick box on the door asking what time you want the room cleaned, or actually taking notice of the do not disturb sign!!!

I hate:
Plastic under sheets
Plastic under sheets
and
Plastic under sheets
I’m without diapers for over 50 and some years now and don’t need them (luckily) to sleep on in a hotel room!
As soon as I spot them I turn over the Hotel Bed

No Carpet! Nothing I hate more than people (ladies) clip cloping in their high heels in the room above me at 3am in the morning. Or the super loud television echoing off the bare walls and floor of the room next door.

One answer to all these annoyances is to find the best hotel possible. Not all hotels charge for breakfast, and more and more hotels have started to offer free Wi-Fi (or at least reasonable prices.) If the walls are thin, use ear plugs. And we can’t really blame hotels for wanting to make as much profits as possible. Charging for room service is just one way. When it comes to dirty hotel rooms I think you can often see by looking at the front of the hotel and the reception whether they take good care of the place.

@ Erica
Of course I agree but It would take me ages to find hotels with free breakfasts, etc. Maybe it’s a new search feature we need on those hotel search websites! ![]()
I agree that the outside and reception gives you a good idea, but have seen stunning outsides of hotels, and receptions too, but when I have got to the room they have been dire – the solution there though is check your hotel before you pay/stay, but not many people have the guts to do that, I know I didnt until recently.

Just a side note, I don’t know about US hotels but in Australia, while many hotels used to include breakfast in the cost, that cost was always accounted for in the overall price of the room. It was never ‘free’. Nowadawys, it tends to be a separate charge so that those who do not wish to dine in the hotel, are not obliged to nor charged for it, and those who do can simply put it on their room account, it’s that easy (or pay cash). I’ve worked in hotels for 7 years and this has been the case in most hotels I have worked for =]
Darren Cronian | 8 January, 2009 at 1:46 pm
@ Dee
That’s very true, but it just feels like it’s free. Also remember that the price of the hotel room has not gone down when breakfast rates were introduced, so you are paying more.

We who work at hotels hate people who put up DND signs and then bitch that their room wasn’t cleaned. We hate people who don’t understand that the reason hotels are forced to charge for room service is because of the cheapskates who won’t tip, leaving the room service attendant to live off $4 an hour. We hate people who expect things for free like breakfast. We hate people who insist things like noisy rooms, expensive room service and no free wifi are the personal fault of the front desk agent. Sad to say that clearly the hotel industry makes us employees just hate…people.

Hotels not properly maintained. How hard is it for the hotel management to schedule things like air conditioner cleanings, etc. A moldy stinky buzzy air conditioner can ruin your entire stay. Theres thousands of people in and out of hotels, if theres isnt a plan to clean and maintain everything in a few years the hotel will be an absolute nightmare.
Stupid stuff like noisy doors. How can a hotel be designed so that the doors freaking slam and disturb you everytime they open. Do they just not give a shit or are they stupid?

I Hate Looking Up At A Hotel And Seeing Big Dirty Yellow Curtins In The Window’s. It’s Filthy.
