There are some days, like today, where I wish I could get away from people and spend some time with myself, so it was interesting to read in today’s copy of the Shortlist magazine, a list of the world’s sparsest countries.

Figures based on the number of people per kilometre
• Mauritania, 3 people
• Iceland, 3 people
• Suriname, 2.7 people
• Australia, 2.6 people
• Namibia, 2.5 people
• French Guiana, 2.1 people
• Mongolia, 1.7 people
• Western Sahara, 1.3 people
• Falkland Islands, 0.25 people
• Greenland, 0.02 people
So, like me if your wanting to find a place to relax, unwind and get away from people, Greenland it is. I enjoy reading this type of useless travel fact, so, let me hear you favourite piece of useless travel information in the comments section.

Greenland’s just voted for their independence, so what else reason would one want to go?

OK here’s mine – Australia is in reality much sparser than you think … 85% of people live on 1% of the land area (ie along the coast), so 99% of the country has less people than anywhere else in the world! (well this second bit is my guess, but I reckon it’s right!). If you want to travel somewhere where you’ll see nobody, outback Oz is it.

I’m surprised Canada didn’t make the list. There are lots of places to go where there aren’t many people. I’d love to go up North sometime. I’ve heard it’s beautiful, and peaceful.

My fact, and something I posted about on my blog is that the flattest country in the world is The Maldives. The highest peak is only 2.4 meters! I’m going to go and build a 2.5 meter high sand castle and stick my flag in the top!

I thought Bolivia might have made it on there as well – there are only 8 million in the whole of the country and it is MAHOOSIVE!
We drove for 5 hours through the Andes and didn’t pass another vehicle (but strangely encountered the odd Bolivian seemingly miles from anywhere, yet looking not in the slightest bit weary – some of the village kids have to walk about 3 hours to their nearest schools).

How about miles of road per car. Coming from the Southern California coast – I don’t want traffic and rush hour madness. Albania, here I come!
