The Olympics is just around the corner so the theme of this months travel blog carnival is, yes, you guessed right, the Beijing 2008 Olympic games. Hopefully, the games will be remembered for it’s sporting achievements, rather than anything else.

Top 10 things to bring to China
A humorous look at what essential items you will need to travel around China - including plenty of clothes, because they only sell small sizes, and a toilet seat because apparently most bathrooms in China you have to, err, squat.
10 Amazing new buildings in China
You have to admit despite not being able to see the Olympic stadium due to the smog the buildings in Beijing look spectacular when you view them online. The blog post highlights buildings such as the alien-space ship looking national theatre and the impressive CCTV building.
Ticket Design of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
I know, who wants to view photographs of sporting tickets, but I’m a bit of a geek, and found this post interesting. The blogger goes into detail about who designed the tickets, and why they chose the colours. I wonder how much tickets are going for on the black market.
The Beijing Olympics Fiasco - Who’s Really To Blame
Interesting post which provides an insight into the issues that journalists have faced with gaining access to some websites on the internet, the environment and human rights. The blogger asks people not to boycott the Olympic games, but instead move on an support the athletes.
In Beijing, Just Before Olympic Games
I used a number of blog search tools to try and find some Chinese bloggers who were writing about the Olympic games but I could only find one blogger. Jian Shuo Wang, writes about his arrival in Beijing, and his experiences so far.
Let the games begin!

Good idea Darren to publish about the Olympics. I’ll stay probably out of it ….gives them too much clout.
I do like the Rem Koolhaas (Yup a Dutch Architect) CCTV building. Is it finished already?

@ Happy Hotelier
As far as I am aware it’s finished and it’s a brilliant looking building.
I’m looking forward to the Olympic games, but I suspect most of the games will be whilst I am tucked up in bed due to the time difference.

Hi Darren,
Thanks for the feedback/link to my blog entry about the latest brouhaha about the Beijing Olympics. Let’s hope in a few days we’ll be focusing on the athletes, the whole raison d’être for these Games, and less on the politics of the host country - an issue that should have been addressed 7 years ago when the Games were awarded to China. As the old adage goes, there’s a time and place for everything.

@ Tanveer
Hi, thanks for dropping by, and yes, let’s hope we’ll be focusing on the games. I noticed today on the news that the city didn’t look as polluted, the smog/fog seems to be disappearing.

Hi Darren:
On a lighthearted note, you might enjoy these photos of signs in China that have been translated into English in preparation for the Olympics.
I originally received some of the photos in an email, then searched the Internet for more, so I don’t take credit for any of them, but they were just too funny not to post, with my captioned comments. All these photos, and more, can be fund on he site http://engrish.com, a site devoted to showcasing humorous English mistakes that appear in Japanese advertising and product design, although they seem to have also branched out to other countries as well. Keep up the good work; as always I love your blog.
