Over the last few years I’ve ranted a lot about airlines and airports, and let’s be honest they can be stressful places to be when really you should be relaxing and enjoying your holiday. I’d hate to think what it would be like having to travel through some of the worlds busiest airports.

Relax and unwind with these air travel tips

Brett Snyder, of the excellent Cranky Flier blog has revealed his air travel tips

Five pre-flight tips

» Get to the airport early to avoid a time crunch
» Be nice to airline employees, it can only help you
» Keep your laptop easily accessible
» Stay hydrated, no alcohol
» Wear shoes that are easy to put on/take off

Five in-flight tips

» Let the middle seat have the armrests
» Sit on the aisle if you anticipate having to get up a lot
» Count the number of rows to the nearest exit; better safe than sorry
» Bring your own snacks so you don’t go hungry
» Wear comfortable clothes that will keep you warm onboard

Good point about wearing shoes you can easily take off. On my last trip I wore my waking boots, what a nightmare going through security because I’d forgotten that the boots had metal on the shoelaces, which meant the scanner beeped, I had to take the shoes off and walk through again.

Another reason to wear comfortable shoes easy to slip on or off is that your feet will swell during a long flight. Not very comfortable if you have tight shoes to get back into. Oh, and the reason you need to get back into them is that removing them during the flight not only feels good, but helps your blood flow, which helps avoid deep vein trombosis (DVT).

@ Jack

Good points especially about Deep Vein Thrombosis I hate keeping my shoes on long haul flights, so more comfortable without them on.

Took a flight from NYC to HK.. LOONNNGGGG flight!!
Was dumb enough to wear motorcyle boots/mid-calf.You know those boots NEVER got back on my feet…esp. after 9 SALTY MEALS & air pressure. I arrived at the hotel in bare feet!!!!
Funny thing is – I KNEW BETTER- I traveled a lot, just wasn’t thinking!!
