As previously predicted the summer is looking rather bleak for travellers, and it’ll only be a matter of time before the fuel strikes affect flights, ferries and travel plans. People are starting to panic buy, and tanker drivers are blocking oil depots, which means in a few days, all hell could break loose.

Here are my travel tips for those of you going on holiday during the fuel strikes:
• Check your departure time with the airport and airline
• Switch on the radio and listen for the latest traffic news
• Check public transport time tables and news updates
• Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the airport or ferry port
• Take snacks and drinks in case you get stuck in the traffic
• Remember your mobile phone for emergencies
• Write down the number of the airline and airport
• Think about staying in a hotel near the airport the night before
• Switch on the GPS to find the quickest way around traffic to the airport of ferry port
Book train seats before travelling
Expect delays on the train networks as more people try and get off the roads, it might even be a good idea to book your seats in advance, or just hope that the tanker drivers, haulage companies come to an agreement and life goes back to normal as it can.
It’s not just the UK that’s having problems
In Portugal and Spain flights have already been diverted, tourists are stuck in traffic jams en-route to the holiday resorts as lorries go slow down the countries busiest motorways. You may have already seen the violent demonstrations in Belgium and other European countries.
The price of oil has seen a number of airlines die off one-by-one, fuel surcharges have been increased or introduced, yet Shell, a UK oil company, has reportedly made profits of 36.5 billion, and god knows what the government is doing with all the revenue from taxes.
I’d like to hear from anyone who has been affected by the fuel strikes.

Thank you for the tips Darren.
I believe that the tanker drivers will be on a 4 day strike this week, which will bring the country to a complete close.

@ Rohan
Lets hope they resolve the pay dispute too, otherwise it’s going to cause chaos on the roads and petrol stations.
