Most of us save like crazy for our summer holiday, but imagine how gutted you would be if it was ruined for one reason or another. It’s amazing how many people forget their passport, but these mistakes could really put you off going on holiday again.

Burgled by social networking thieves
How many of you have children who have a Facebook, Bebo or MySpace account, and how many of you check their profile to see if information like your home address is listed? Imagine some social networking thief comes along, sees the home address and status message that you are on holiday.
Make sure that social networking profiles are private to just close friends, and do not include home address details and other private information. Whilst children might not appreciate you asking to snoop at their profile, it’s worth the hassle if it means you are not going to come home to a burgled house.
Getting locked up in jail
Thankfully, I have never been locked up in jail, but I know someone who has. The usual story, night out, drunken, starts a fight, gets arrested. Remember each country is different, and whilst in the UK, you might get a fine and a slapped hand, in other countries you could end up spending months inside jail.
On on holiday the hotel room next door was broken into, I was laid in bed reading a book, when I was taken down to the hotel reception by police, and quizzed about my whereabouts. They searched the room. It was my first time abroad, and travelling alone, so you can imagine how scared I was.
Holiday scam robbery
Prior to my trip to Kuala Lumpur I decided to read the local English newspaper online. I read an article about a scam where a local would chat to tourists, invite them into their home or local café for a drink, then mugged them of their money, some tourists were badly beat up.
Minutes after leaving the hotel I was accosted by a local and asked if I would like to have a drink and chat about England, remembering the news story, I was polite and walked away, quickly. Even if I had not read the article I still would have walked away, but I am sure some travellers would not have.
Leaving your child at home
No, I don’t mean forgetting your child at home, even though I am sure that’s happened before to someone, but at what age do you leave your child at home. No matter how much you trust them you cannot trust their friends.
I remember when I was 15, a mate invited a few of us around to his house whilst his parents were away for the weekend. Someone from school found out and tons of people turned up, and I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.
I’d be interested to hear if anyone has been affected by any of the above.

I think getting locked up in jail ruins any day…home or away!
Getting scammed or robbed would be the worst for me. I got scammed the first time in Thailand…wasnt for a lot of money but I couldn’t believe I fell for i t!

I think the point Darren was making was that in some countries you can get long term jail sentances where in the UK its much more lenient.
No mention of the death penalty though, which is common practice in some US states, Thailand other destinations.

I wouldn’t say that these are humourous mistakes that ruin your holiday. Very good points raised.
