I’ve mentioned before that travellers in the UK will prefer to go on long haul holidays this year, rather than visit European destinations due to the weak Euro, and Trip Advisor confirmed that today when it published it’s ten most searched destinations from UK visitors.

UK travellers fall out of love with Europe

Only 3 destinations are within Europe.

1. Maldives
2. Las Vegas
3. Dubai
4. Orlando
5. Turkey
6. New York City
7. Egypt
8. Cuba
9. Paris
10. London

The surprise destination for me in that list is Turkey, because it’s there ahead of popular cities like Madrid and Rome. Out of this list of destinations would you like to visit the most this year, I think my choice would be between New York and Cuba.

Definitely New York as a top choice from this list, I’d say. I just got back from the city at the end of March and was told by a New Yorker that to us Brits, the US is now like Mexico was for them, in terms of going over there to exploit the rate of exchange.

I only wish I’d bought my Euros to pay for an impending France trip several months back - I got good value flights, but the accommodation which I’ve yet to pay for (a birthday present for my partner) is now setting me back a substantial amount more than was originally intended!

@ Andrea,

Yep the week Sterling and Euro is certainly making travelling expensive at the moment, so the US seems to be best for value.

The problem though is the price of flights due to the fuel surcharges and taxes that you have to add to the flight price.

I would choose Cuba, followed closely by Dubai, and I wonder why London is in that list. Maybe because of the bank hoildays?

@ Rohan

That could be the reason, plus there’s a lot of sporting events taking place down in London, i.e. football, rugby finals, cricket etc.

it’s itneresting to see the Maldives on top. I didn’t know that was such a popular destination.

@ Matt

Yes, I thought that too. A few friends have gone to Maldives in the last 12 months, but I would not have thought it would be the most searched on Trip Advisor

Darren you could be right.

Shame about Leeds yesterday, was wanting them to win.

Turkey is Wonderful Darren, Friendly people, Great value for money, Self-sufficient so the choice of Cuisine is fantastic and some great Boutique Hotels, such as Montenegro near Gocek, Yedinburlar Lighthouse fantastic for Vegetarians, and the Asfiya Hotel in Kalkan, A Gulet Cruise at £585 per person full Board offers an incredible way to see the Turquoise Coast and far better than any all-inclusive and better value for money as the pound is good against the Turkish Lira.

Darren Cronian | 27 May, 2008 at 9:24 am

@ Lee

Of course the Turkish Lira. I have no idea why but I thought that they had moved on to the Euro, so I can see now why it would be an attractive destination this year.

Tempted myself.

Full board - surprised people still book full-board holidays, because aren’t you restricted to when you can and can’t eat?
