I’m addicted to travelling, I’d love to visit more travel destinations than I do, in fact if I could afford it, and had enough leave at work I would travel some where different ever month. I’ve decided that I want to visit four new destinations this year and these are the reasons why:

Meeting new people
I travel a lot by myself, some people would call that sad, but I love my own company, and it gives me the opportunity of meeting new people; locals especially love talking with you and helping you understand their way of life and also learning more about England.
Trying the local delicacies
I hate it when I see English people going into the likes of McDonalds, and FKC abroad – I much prefer to eat the local delicacies, and sample the local beers. In fact every destination I visit I try out their locally brewed beer, and have come to love beers like Mythos, in an ice cold beer jug.
The atmosphere of travelling
The atmosphere of arriving in a new country, watching the scenery as I take the trip to my hotel, people watching in a local bar or café. The build up of excitement as I arrive at my airport (hopefully on time) and then getting on to the plane for my journey – I just love the buzz of travelling.
Learning new languages
Being from Yorkshire, it’s sometimes difficult to understand us, we talk quite fast, well I do, and we don’t know when to shut up, so it’s always handy to learn some of the local language and I actually enjoy learning the basics before I travel.
Mixing with the locals
Whilst mixing with tourists provides a good atmosphere, you cannot beat sat in a café or restaurant surrounded by locals. You learn a lot about the language, and how they interact with other locals; I was in Torrevieja at my dad’s apartment, and we were invited to a house party, most of the guests could speak fairly good English and we learnt alot about their culture.
Finding exciting attractions
When I plan a trip away, I always create a list of places that I want to visit, and make sure I visit those places. There’s been times when I’ve arrived at the attraction and I’ve stood there with excitement, the Sydney Harbour bridge was one of those occasions.
The memories
I love taking my camera wherever I go, and I try and take as many pictures as I can, so that I can reminisce. I drive the family mad because whenever I return from a holiday or weekend trip, I get them together and show all of the photos.
Why do you love travelling?

Typical American
Good article Darren.
I love travelling because I can get away from home and work. Let my hair down and relax.

I had the rare privilege of growing up in Hawaii. One of my earliest memories was seeing tourist, who saved all their lives for a trip of a lifetime, but were too old to enjoy it. I determined early on to travel while I had my health, and I’m glad that I’ve been able to do just that.

Behave! They can’t help it that we speak proper English and they speak American English!
@ Blunderbus
Great point. Travel now not when you have to spend it short of breath.

I completely agree with you, I travel for the same reasons. I also always eat local food, I find this really exciting. Perhaps the thing I like most is the atmosphere, I love to just walk by streets of foreign city and feel the life around, not knowing what to expect when I turn around the corner.

Yes I love the atmosphere too. I remember walking around the Chinese market in Kuala lumpur at night by myself – I was scared, but happy and very excited.
I’ve still got the abidas trainers and ralox watch I paid £3.99 for.

Sorry Dazza I’ll behave.
I was joking because I have American friends and love them “dude”

Lol at the abidas and Ralox! Funny.

@ Rohan
My abidas trainers have lasted longer than my real reebock trainers!
As for the ralox watch it kept ticking backwards, so I was loosing time.. haha

I love travelling because it broadens my horizons and helps me understand people and their cultures better. The world can be so small minded and “set in its ways”. When we travel we begin to realize there is more than one way to live life and be happy. I think it opens us up to accept people and their “differences”.

@ Carol
That is so true about getting to accept people and learn about other ways of life.
