Ofcom have given airlines the go ahead for them to allow mobile phones on board UK registered aircraft. I am personally against allowing mobile phones on planes especially if the cabin crew are not given the power to tell users to keep their voice down.

Airlines given approval for mobile phones on flights

Why am I against mobile phones on flights.

A plane is not like most forms of public transport – you cannot change your seat and move away from a noisy passenger like you can on a train or bus. It only takes an individual to spoil it for everyone else as the airline turn off the service. I wonder if we could see an increase in air rage.

I’m not confident that they are no health and safety issues and mobile phone users generally speak louder than when talking to a passenger sat next to them. This is just another money spinning idea to increase revenue for the airlines without seeking the opinion of consumers.

What is your opinion?

Globus agrees entirely with you. Even for long-haul flights, surely people can get organised enough (no matter how important the calls) to be able to live without them for a short time. Globus can, and Globus would say he’s pretty busy, so he sees no reason why others could not.

Globus abhors the idea of being sat next to another passenger bawling into their cellphone for the duration of a flight. It’s irritating enough on trains with every few minutes the irksome ‘beep’ of someone’s text message, or the aggravating break-up of signal with incumbent multiple calls. Like Damien Hurst’s art, or the congestion charge in Manchester, it’s a further example of something that shouldn’t be permitted even if it is possible.

great. now next to racist guy, drunk guy, inappropriate contact guy, and armrest thief guy, i can sit next to talks to loud on the phone the whole flight so i can’t concentrate on anything guy.

once, on a long train trip, i sat next to pathetic whining boyfriend on the other end of the line girl for EIGHT HOURS.

heaven help us.

Good rants! ;)

I’m glad people agree with me as I cannot think of anything worse. I had a similar scenario on a bus where a girl was having a whinge about her boyfriend, she spoke loud, but thankfully, the bus was a double decker so I stormed off upstairs.

I’m just hoping and praying that the mobile phone networks make flight phone calls as ridiculously expensive as roaming calls abroad. In fact can we not stick people who want to use their mobile phone in the baggage hold, so that they can’t annoy the hell out of us.

I can see it now:

Air hostess: Hello Sir, here is your lunch
Passenger: Yeh dude I’m talking on the phone on an airplane!
Air hostess: Sir, your food
Passenger: Whoooo hooooooo I’m flying in the sky!
Air hostess: [Throws food on lap and storms off in a rage]

Hhahaa Yes I cannot wait to slap someone over the head with my food tray inflight for talking too loud on their phone.

My sister is an air hostess and she spoke to her friends about this and they all said it’s going to cause problems in the flight. She said mobile users won’t pay attention to safety demos.

Jaysus stop complaining willya.

Just put on your headphones and watch a movie and keep your noses out of other peoples telephone conversations.

Darren Cronian | 30 March, 2008 at 2:05 pm

That’s a good idea Jason.

I wonder if the airline will provide free sound proof headphones.

Jason sounds like he works for an airline of one of the telecommunication companies that are going to make a fortune out of this.

No wonder they didn’t kick up a fuss when the EU told them to reduce roaming costs because they knew they could take advantage of this.

Seems to be about adding more hassle to flying especially short haul. Will concentrate our minds on alternatives eg rail travel in Europe. The inconsiderate minority using mobiles thoughtlessly are likely to intrude on the comfort and relaxation of the rest.

Traveling is hard enough when your sitting close to someone with crying kids. I can only imagine what it would be like to sit next to someone yaking on their cell phone the entire time. No way!! There should be a special area for the crying kids and people wanting to talk on their phone.
