Through Twitter I was informed about a site called QIK, basically you can record a video of your holiday with your mobile phone, and it’s streamed live on the site. So potentially, you could get your family and friends to watch snippets of video from your holiday as it happens.

Watch your family and friends on holiday

This morning I was able to watch a live video of a family on the beach in Australia, and the Sunburst music festival in Kuala Lumpur. Personally, I’m not sure I would like to my family and friends watching me on my travels; to get away from life back home is one of the reasons why I go on holiday.

Do you think this technology would be useful to the industry or holidaymakers?

Dull, pointless waste of time but no doubt the site will be a roaring success and earn the founders several hundred million ;-)

What’s Mick McCarthy doing in that photo?

Maybe you could expand on why you think its a pointless waste of time Garri?

I don’t think it’s something I’d use much to be honest as I try to escape technology when I go on holiday and ‘get away from it all’. I suppose it might be useful if you wanted to share a special event/moment with those back at home though.

We are visiting my wife’s sister in Auckland this Summer. Some of the family have not seen her for over 12 years, so this would be great.

What type of phone do you need?

Ruth has helpfully expanded on my behalf. As much as I’d love to be on a beach with my family in Australia, I’m not sure it would be that interesting to anyone.

Rohan, I would assume any mobile that you can take videos on and has access to the internet to stream the video live.

Garri, I’m sure it has some uses for some people, but I disagree its’ dull and a pointless waste of time.

How many people watch you tube videos recorded by complete strangers.

I personally believe, that travels should be without (any kind of) technology including cellphones and random email checks.

Thats how I forgot all about world and get relaxed. isn’t it the aim of a travel?

Darren Cronian | 18 March, 2008 at 2:21 am

Talkntravel, true I suppose.

Times are changing though. More of us are using mobile technology to check in to our flights, searching for restaurant reviews etc.

I agree with you though we go on holiday to get relaxed and unwind.

I believe capturing precious moments using a camera phone or any gadget during a vacation is worthwhile.

Photos and Videos of one’s travel are reminder and souvenirs of a great vacation. I agree with TalknTravel that
gadgets may alter vacation plans but they are indispensable especially during emergencies.
