Email lands in the rants inbox today, from BAA informing me of the launch of the UK’s first radio-frequency identification baggage trial, with Emirates airlines. According to BAA, this new technology could revolutionise the way bags are tracked and monitored at Heathrow Airport.

BAA and Emirates trial new Technology to handle baggage

The new system tracks bags for passengers travelling with Emirates to and from Dubai bags at every stage of their journey. Apparently staff will be applying tags containing chips, which contain stored information including the passengers name and route and then are read on entry to the baggage system for tracking.

An SMS will be sent to the passenger on arrival at the airport to inform them of their baggage reclaim belt. Sounds pretty impressive and I’d be interested to hear from anyone who takes part in the trials, or do you think this in the long term solution for airlines and lost baggage?
