The environment is a massive topic of discussion within the travel industry, and today is Blog Action Day, where bloggers around the web unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind – the environment

Blog Action Day – Let’s help the environment

We all have a responsibility to help protect the environment because we are all responsible for global warming. I feel I’m a hypocrite educating you all to be more environmentally friendly, when I am not myself, but there’s a lot we can do to help protect the environment:

Walk or Use public transport

Not only is walking good for the environment is good for our health, with the British Heart Association state that we should all take at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Public transport, whilst not particularly reliable is another way you can help.

Off-set your CO2 emissions

Whenever I fly, I offset my carbon emissions by contributing to sites like Climate Care, where the money is used to help projects in third world countries. With Climate Care you calculate your emissions and then contribute by credit or debit card.

Conserve water

You can conserve water by only using your washing machine when you have a full load, and don’t let the water run whilst washing your dishes. We all take water for granted, so we should think about how we can conserve water.

Reduce the amount of waste

I have lost count on the number of plastic bags I have thrown away in the past month. Rather than throwing them away, take them to the shop and re-use them. The Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge have banned shops using plastic bags, and everyone uses more environment friendly bags.

Use less energy

I’m sat at the PC, and the TV is behind me, it’s switched on, and I am not watching it – not very environmentally friendly is it. You can make changes to reduce energy, by using energy saving bulbs, turn electrical equipment off – not on standby.

Please pass the message around and help promote Blog Action Day.

We have taken part as well today.

As our post indicates, offsetting your carbon emissions is harder than many might think. Not many travel companies allow consumers to do it themselves this but claim they do it for you.

As Darren rightly points out, Climate Care is a good site for this.
