On Tuesday, I am heading for a week of relaxation on holiday to Crete, one of the many Greek Islands. My flight is with Monarch Airlines, and I am hearing bad feedback from work colleagues and friends, so ran a quick search in Google and found an excellent site if you want to read reviews on airlines and airports.

Any Experience with Monarch Airlines?

The site is called SkyTrax, and features Monarch, and I have to say my confidence hasn’t improved after reading these reviews. A lot of the complaints appear to be relating to leg room, which won’t bother me because I am a short arse.

I’ve been told to expect delays, no in-flight entertainment and I just wondered if anyone has any good comments on Monarch Airlines. I can’t imagine sat listening to music for 3 hrs and 20 minutes. Argh.

With all chartered airlines I think you have a higher chance of a delay.

Rohan yep thats what someone else told me yesterday.

The annoying thing is that it didnt tell you that it was a charter airline you were booking with as part of the holiday booking process. I assumed [because a work colleague booked with the same company] that I would be flying with Olympic Airlines, obviously not!

I am sat on a monarch plane as I write. The experience has been terrible. You may ask why am I using electronic devices on a plane, surely that’s not allowed. Well it is, if you’re not going anywhere. The flight is from egypt to Gatwick, supposedly 5 hours. There was an initial 3 hour delay in egypt, which monarch admitted was their fault, although they did compensate us with a cup of tea. Then we were told that there wasn’t enough fuel to get us back to gatwick, which is why I’m now writing this. We have been stuck on a runway in Venice now for 2 hours waiting to be refuelled and still no sign of it happening. I cannot believe this is a profitable company. Take my advice, do not fly monarch, they will ruin your holiday.

We heard bad reviews too, and guess what… they were true. Whilst flights were on time, the legroom is terrible. Add to this the faulty video monitors. But worst of all was the 2 hours it took to be offered a drink, then another hour for food (using the term loosely) and then another 2 hours to remove the used food trays. In addition to the poor legroom, the width of the seats is limited - ok if you’re flying to Munchkin Land

I cannot believe the bad timekeeping of monarch on all uk flights to spain. As I speak they have not arrived on time once. The classic is, that if you e-mail any form of complaint, an auto message comes back that we will answer within three weeks. I could not book a flight with them, particulary if timing was important. Before you book go to the airport website and check the history of the flight

MONARCH - MALDIVES…NEVER AGAIN
Avoid any flight with Monarch to the maldives, absolutely shocking service, we are in the middle of legal action against them for treeting us like cattle.
We knew on our way home we had to drop off gatwick passengers, however in the sky was told all manchester people stay seated when we land, gatwick people get off first then all manchester people to get off and change planes this will be 1.5hrs wait, we had a little moan but then 5 hrs later the plane came for us to take us all to manchester after a 12 hr jorney already we had been travelling 22 hrs in total since we left the maldives by seaplane. our 5 star island was a honeymoon out of this world but monarch you will NEVER get my custom ever again or my customers custom has being a travel agent i will avoid you like the plague! also £2.50 for rental of head sets to watch sponge bob….come on even mytravel gave you head sets for free!. miserable crew what on earth are they doing long haul for if they cant cope with the hrs and spend their time gossiping in the back of the plane and yawning throughout the flight! or had they been watching sponge bob also on the poor tvs in the middle of the plane that even with a pair of binoculars you still wouldnt be able to see the tvs, who in this day & age doesnt have seat back tvs on long haul!!!! I AM FURIOUS WITH YOU! but i bet the MD Tim Jeans will still get a bonus.
goodbye monarch and hello again to first choice airways!
