Apparently travel consumers are loosing out because we fail to reclaim the tax and duty paid on cancelled flight tickets. Well, I for one didn’t know you could reclaim this, and I am sure the airlines aren’t going to remind me to do this.

According to an Insure and Go poll of 2070 people, conducted by YouGov this summer, nearly half of travellers (48%) are not aware they can claim it back, while 3% said they were put off by the high administration charge from the airline.
So reclaim back your taxes! Don’t let the airlines take your hard earnt cash.

How does one reclaim tax and duty?
Thanks.

You need to contact the airline direct Peter.
I’ve heard that some airlines are now charging an admin fee for this, surprise surprise.

Be very aware of the admin fees, in some cases you can owe the airline money - no joke!
Check out the AUC news section for the story from late August:

We always advise customers to reclaim tax. This week 1 person should be receiving £186.40 in tax refund. The ticket originally cost £426.40
But read the small print. The administration charges can be higher than the tax.

Thanks Nicholas, that’s encouraging to hear that travel agencies are advising consumers of this!
£186.40 is a lot of money to have refunded.

I am more likely to book a holiday through a company like Nicholas’s.
For a number of years I have booked our family holiday through a local independent travel agency.

Having cancelled a holiday which involved some flights with Ryanair May 07 Attempted to recover taxes - Ryan air maintained that thier admin charge exceeded tax ( £37) - Claimed whole built up holiday package from travel insurance company - Insurance dedected the £37 from payment as insurance ( small print) do not cover admin charges!! - Buyer Beware - It does not pay to be honest - You are taken for a ride!!
