It wasn’t long ago, when the only option travel consumers had was to book a package holiday with a reputation travel agency or tour operator, but now, with the internet, consumers can do it alone and plan and book their own holiday.

I love planning my holiday and I’ve been busy over the weekend looking for cheap flights and hotels for my trip to Canada and USA next June. I want to visit Toronto, Niagara Falls, Boston, NYC, and Chicago, and plan to catch a flight to Toronto, and take a coach and train from Toronto all the way through to NYC.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
I have to admit that I am a little nervous about travelling all that way and booking my own flights and accommodation, compared to booking a package deal, and being covered by ATOL etc. I’ll obviously take out travel insurance, but it’s made me think is it best to save money or pay a little more, for more protection.
Any tips or words of wisdom?

You can catch a greyhound coach from Toronto to New York no problem. I think they might even pass through Buffalo, but can’t remember for sure.

This is farily easy. Though keep in mind the american feeling only people who can’t afford to fly use the bus. I did this last year for a rotary group. They did coach trip to Niagara and train for Boston/New York. Is easy to do the train to toronto.
Also thing to bar in mind is mostly you book hotels though an agncy even if you book on the internet. Means same price on high street. eg Octopus or needahotel (both are agencies) or even Expedia.

Hi! I’m American but over on the other coast (California). Your best bet is to look at the Amtrak.com link for train service. The train service is great on the east coast and includes Canada. As the previous post mentions, in the states the Greyhound is usually thre resort of those who can’t afford. Our trains are not too expensive and are considered the preferred method of travel (you often get nicer views this way as well).
I looked at Amtrak for your Toronto to New York City route. I looked at a day in Sept and the one way route was about $90, which with today’s exchange rate is not bad!
I have a friend from Derby who frequenty visits Canada (has a brother there). He’s in Canada now. When he gets home, I could put you in touch if you like.

I lived in Toronto, now live in NYC. Trains and buses here are not nearly as convenient as Europe. Since you want to go to Niagara Falls, which is on the way from Toronto to Europe,
I suggest you take a bus/Train from toronto to Niagara falls, do your tourist thing in the falls, then fly from Buffalo to NYC. the BUF-NYC flight is cheap (usually $49-$59 one way). Getting from niagara falls to the buffalo airport is easy–there are shuttles.
hotels in Niagara falls are very plentiful. don’t be afraid to stay in a dive…they’re cheap, and not as bad as they look. Also, in the falls, do not eat (if you can help it), in the downtown. Eat at the casinos.

Sara it’s such a huge country I couldn’t possibly visit all of it
Thanks for the info, it looks like the train is the best option.

Hey Darren.
First off, I’d consider visiting in this order: Boston - New York - Toronto/Niagara - Chicago, or vice-versa. You can switch the order of Boston & New York if you want, depending on how the flights work out. The main point being that Toronto/Niagara are between the East Coast and Chicago.
I love bus travel but lots of people look down on it as other posters have said. But it’s very cheap, it goes lots of places, and you’ll see a side of America that many people don’t (that is, people who can’t afford to drive).
NY Boston is well served by regular buses (Greyhound / Peter Pan), Chinatown buses (super cheap) and Amtrak trains.
There are often airfare deals on NYC to Buffalo (which is near Niagara). Niagara to NYC or Boston is about ten hours overland, so bear that in mind. Also you should know that Niagara isn’t all that much — if you have to skip something, I’d choose that (but Toronto is a world class city).
Finally, consider driving. You won’t want a car in New York or Boston, but for the part where you’re traveling long distances across country a car will let you explore the “in-between” places that not too many people get to see. You could rent in New York and drive to Chicago via Toronto/Niagara and then drive back or drop the car in Chicago and take the overnight train, with sleeper, back to New York to get your flight home.

Wow, thanks for the excellent information Larry.
Will bear your advice in mind.
I only intend to stay at Niagara for 1 day or 2 just to see the falls really.

Looking to get from Chicago to Toronto by land either by train or coach. Any options?
