Sorry, but really what has all the buzz being about Dopplr. I read about this social networking site on The Guardian website and received an invite [Thanks Vero!] so thought I would register to see what all the fuss was about.

Introducing Dopplr – Travel Social Networking

Erm boring! There’s nothing unique about Dopplr, that’s not already being covered on other social networking sites – okay I can see where my friends are looking to go on their travels, but I can do that on Facebook, with the tons of application add-ons from the likes of SideStep, Trip Advisor etc.

The site is bland, the Google maps are small and I am sat here thinking that maybe I am missing something because for a site that’s had a lot of buzz about it, it’s not getting me excited. If you want an invite I have six invites left.

Cheers Darren but I’ll pass on the invites, thanks anyway ;-)

I think you nailed it perfectly in your assessment but let’s give them some credit, at least they didn’t called their site: Trip[insert word here].com ;-)

Garri & Rob, glad I am not the only one.

Krista what did you think of Dopplr?

Darren, The Guardian article says the founders are ex-BBC (like that’s a good thing, the corporation is a shambles right now)

I used to go to school with a Mark Richardson, doubt it’s the same bloke, but you never know ;-)

A bit of a yawn thus far. It just doesn’t really seem like you can do much other than share your trips (in a very limited fashion). Maybe it will get more exciting as the site ramps up…?

Krista, I hope so.

I really can’t see many people using this site as it stands.

dopplr is without a doubt the worst travelers web site in the universe! they don’t have a map! say albion, MI and they think you mean albion, PA. say arlington, VA and they think you mean arlington, TX. (who goes to arlington, TX?!?)

i have been waiting for months for dopplr to learn a little geography, but at this point, i am have had enough. i am fed up

dopplr an utterly useless web site.

Rhumer, I disagree about it being the worst travellers site, I have seen much worse. Is the mapping problem with Google Maps rather than the Dopplr website though?

The Google maping could be used better IMO.

I don’t think it’s an utterly useless site but it’s not got a great deal going for it as it stands.

Darren (and others who see, ahem, room for improvement at Dopplr) —

Thanks for your comments, which are quite helpful for our team. We’re working hard to fix the early flaws and to add features, and hope you’ll keep in mind that we’re in beta mode. I hope in the near future to get back to you with more specific good news about such things…

Dan (from Dopplr)
