We had gone up the Sheldonian in Oxford the week before, but that only has 100 something steps and is an ordinary staircase, not the tower stairs (which I find very scary).

Going up top of the buildings (and castles) is a great way to get the view but boy, you EARN it. :)

Susan, walking up the minster tower is exhausting! I took my 10 yr old nephew earlier in the year, and was absolutely shattered when I got to the top. The best way to see York for the first time is by open top bus.

We saw the Viking festival earlier in the year and it was great fun.

York is lovely and BIG... bigger than I remembered. I was there first way back in 1990 so this was a bit of a revisit. Loved York Minster (of course) and enjoyed lunch in the Shambles... really feels like going back in time.

My mom and I rode the open top on again, off again bus but I think we might have been better served just to walk over from the train (oh I mean rail) station.

We were just there for the one day (we were staying with a friend in Derby and amusing ourselves while he was at work).

Funniest thing was going up the Minster tower. We got to the roof-line and I was leading. I look back and my mom is still standing in the doorway. She said, We don't need to go the rest of the way up, do we? As many California mountains as she's backpacked across, looking down from the roof got her. I enjoyed the view across the city from there and we went back down. Really lovely view on a nice sunny day. :)

How did you find York Susan?

I have visited York a few times, and it's a lovely city.

I think I remember reading that Darren lives near York, you should of popped in for a coffee! :D

This trip was spent mostly in Wales (down in Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Ogmore Vale). Last year I toured around with my Mom and we got as far north as York (the city of) but next trip she would LOVE to explore the Yorkshire Dales.

I was concerned about whether we could get around on public transport (I'm too chicken to drive in the UK) but looking at some of the links, it looks like we could get around fine. Walks in the countryside are what I love most about your country!
