Phew at last wonderful weather! The lack of a blog post yesterday was because I spent all day outside walking in Grassington, which is just an amazing place for walking and has some great scenery.

If you’re ever in this part of the country, you have to spend a few days in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors or the Lake District. After our 10 mile walk, we found a local pub that had organised a BBQ, so we sat outside drinking cold beer [yep we do have cold beer up here!] and eating beef burgers and chicken which probably wasn’t healthy after a long walk.
I can understand though why so many of us go on holidays abroad as the prices of holiday homes in England is just incredible. We passed a cottage, okay, it had spectacular views, but the owners were renting it out at £1,000 a week, during the peak season, which is probably out of budget for a lot of families.

Your so lucky to live near such beautiful scenery.
I live in the Midlands, and we’d love to move the family to either Cornwall or Yorkshire as our son has bad asthma and the doctors have said fresh air will do him the World of good.

I’ve never been to Cornwall, but I would love to one day. We are lucky really, because on our doorstep, we have the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Moor, and Lake District two hours drive away.
Take a week off work and spend a week in any of these national parks and I am sure you’ll see an improvement in your son’s asthma.

The Yorkshire Dales and Lake District are in my opinion the nicest tourist spots in England. Forget London, and the cities, take a picnic, and head to the countryside, and relax in the sun.

I agree the Lake District is beautiful.
Have you been watching the programme on BBC called Mountains?
It recently featured the Lakes.

Rachel, I stayed at a nice B&B in Windermere during May, and the weather was perfect.
I havent’ seen the programme but I saw an advert about it.
I’d love to live in the Lake District.

Well we went to the Lakes and it rained… every day!

It’s worth adding that holidays in our home of residency is a lot easier on the environment too. Especially if like me you have no choice but to take public transport.

I just got home from the UK but you make me want to jump back on the plane and come explore the Yorkshire Dales.

Whereabouts did you visit in the UK Susan?
Susan Powell | 9 August, 2007 at 1:07 am
This trip was spent mostly in Wales (down in Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Ogmore Vale). Last year I toured around with my Mom and we got as far north as York (the city of) but next trip she would LOVE to explore the Yorkshire Dales.
I was concerned about whether we could get around on public transport (I’m too chicken to drive in the UK) but looking at some of the links, it looks like we could get around fine. Walks in the countryside are what I love most about your country!

How did you find York Susan?
I have visited York a few times, and it’s a lovely city.
I think I remember reading that Darren lives near York, you should of popped in for a coffee!

York is lovely and BIG… bigger than I remembered. I was there first way back in 1990 so this was a bit of a revisit. Loved York Minster (of course) and enjoyed lunch in the Shambles… really feels like going back in time.
My mom and I rode the open top on again, off again bus but I think we might have been better served just to walk over from the train (oh I mean rail) station.
We were just there for the one day (we were staying with a friend in Derby and amusing ourselves while he was at work).
Funniest thing was going up the Minster tower. We got to the roof-line and I was leading. I look back and my mom is still standing in the doorway. She said, We don’t need to go the rest of the way up, do we? As many California mountains as she’s backpacked across, looking down from the roof got her. I enjoyed the view across the city from there and we went back down. Really lovely view on a nice sunny day.

Susan, walking up the minster tower is exhausting! I took my 10 yr old nephew earlier in the year, and was absolutely shattered when I got to the top. The best way to see York for the first time is by open top bus.
We saw the Viking festival earlier in the year and it was great fun.

We had gone up the Sheldonian in Oxford the week before, but that only has 100 something steps and is an ordinary staircase, not the tower stairs (which I find very scary).
Going up top of the buildings (and castles) is a great way to get the view but boy, you EARN it.
