I’m no weather reporter, but if the last two days are anything to go by, we could be in for a hot August, which will have us all reaching for the barbeques and planning our weekends enjoying the scorching summer sun. Whether this is a fun day out with the family, relaxing reading a book in the garden, or enjoying a couple of well earned drinks at the local pub, it’s important to be sensible.

Stay safe in the Summer Sun

Today, I received an email from Cancer Research UK who has recently launched their SunSmart campaign to raise awareness of skin cancer and provide guidance.

- Spend time in the shade between 11 and 3
- Make sure you never burn
- Aim to cover up with a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses
- Remember to take extra care with children
- Then use factor 15+ sunscreen

According to Macmillan Cancer research, skin cancer is the UK’s most common cancer in both men and women with more than 73,000 cases each year. The incidence of malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, continues to increase with 8,100 new cases and 1,800 deaths each year.

Many cases could be prevented by taking precautions against the sun’s ultra-violet rays and further information can be found at the official SunSmart website.

I’m not a weather forecaster either Darren, but looking at satelite pictures at present Tropical Storm Chantal is off the coast of Newfoundland at present and could intensify as it crosses the Atlantic ocean and could head in our direction or possibly heading towards Norway, I think we are still in for some more rough weather.

However the Sunsmart Campaign is worth heeding, and We already include this document when we give out our clients travel documents.

Talking of Weather, I was in Iceland last week, and they were complaining about the lack of Rain!! You will be able to read all about it and see some great Photos from tomorrow on our blog at http://www.selectworld.travel

*crossing fingers, toes, hairs and eyes* Please please please please let us have at least a month of BBQ’ing! I haven’t brought my BBQ out of the garage since April, it’s just ridiculous!

With regards to the sun, for women or men who don’t have issues with skincare products, I suggest keeping a routine of 15spf sunscreen all year long. Even in the winter, it benefits your skin hugely to be protected!

Here’s to a few weeks of sun, hopefully!

Great advice Darren.

Do you know about the ‘know before you go’ campaign? Your site would fit very nicely into this campaign. Please email me for more information, and I would be glad to help.

I don’t know about everyone else but the weather has just been perfect this weekend, to the point we got our BBQ out yesterday afternoon.

It’s been great weather here. We went walking through the Yorkshire Dales yesterday, was great fun, and good walking weather. Finished off with a BBQ in one of the local pubs.

Today, I’m playing catch-up with work!

Sun protection though is a very serious matter, and we think because we are at home in England that we don’t have to protect ourselves when we are out in the Sun, either getting to work or having a day out with the family.

My mother died of cancer 3 years ago and I have to congratulate you on raising awareness. Whilst my mother’s cancer wasn’t skin cancer, there were people in the nursing home that did have skin cancer, and believe me its nasty.

No problem Sarah, it’s an important topic to raise and a topic so many of us forget about.

We put factor 50 on our kids in Ibiza.

Factor 15 is really for adults.

Rachel | 6 August, 2007 at 1:06 pm

I use factor 30 because I burn like Toast.

Good article, and a good reminder at this time of the year.

I use factor 30 too, being fair skinned I go red like a tomato in no time.

Thanks for the comments Rachel.

I’m a keen advocate of using these once a day suntan lotions such as P20. Other people are always surprised how brown I go even though it is factor 20, because they don’t understand that the *factor* relates to your personal burn time. I am quite dark skinned so I can do an hour either side then an hour rest without getting burnt. They are also waterproof and therefore you don’t have to worry about dipping in and out of the pool/sea. These products are good for blokes who are notorious about considering sun tan lotion as *cissy* and for kids as you only have to get them to stand still once!
I tried the new Piz Bruin version this year but was singularly unimpressed as my swimwear rubbed it off and I had a nice pink outline where my bikini had been! It would probably be OK if you applied twice a day but that does defeat the object a little. I shall stick to P20 and maybe try Uvasun? which is similar although I have only ever seen that at the airport or on planes. P20 is available in Superdrug and a few other places. My parents use it in the UK because if it is hot then the stuff doesn’t run into your eyes whilst you’re out and about - so another tick for sightseeing use.
