I’m still searching the Internet for a holiday in October, and I had a quick look on the Manos website and noticed that you can donate 40p, to an environment charity, when you make a booking online. You can opt out of the donation if you wish, but what is 40p!

I thought this was a great idea, and I would much prefer to donate some money to a charity than to give it to the government in the form of air passenger tax. I’m trying to be environmentally friendly, and I am still in a battle with my local council over recycling bins [they won’t give me one!] so I am compiling a list of environmentally friendly companies, which I will update:
Cosmos
British Airways
First Choice
Gambia Experience
Hayes & Jarvis
Manos
Panorama
Silverjet
Sunvil
Style
Thomas Cook
Please contact me if your travel company donates money or allows consumers to donate to environment charities.

There are also eco tours, which help the people in the areas, your visiting. An example of these would be GAP tours, which are available though any independent agent.
1000 travel companies have currently made environmental pledges in the TTG’s scream if your green campaign.
And of course my company.

Thanks for the list Nicholas.
I’ll also check out TTG’s campaign.

I work for Explore so have an interest, however we have a committed Responsible Tourism policy. We encourage people to offset their air travel via Climatecare.org which support a number of environmental concerns. All employee travel is currently offset. We are also looking at including a carbon offset within tour prices.
We donate monies to various charities around the world which you can see on our Responsible tourism page and there are regular charity events organised by employees (which I’ve been showing some of on our blog site).

Brian / Paul,
Can you explain a little more what responsible tourism is - I’m one of those consumers that see’s this phrase, but doesn’t really understand what it actually means to me.

Darren
Essentially RT is about not exploiting the destination & people where you visit and acting responsibly - so environmental concerns, being ethical in how we deal with employees, agents, making a positive impact rather than a negative one on where we travel. So from our RT policy, we believe:
* People who work for Explore should be treated fairly and paid a fair wage
* We should learn about and respect the customs and culture of the country we are visiting so that we do not offend local people
* We should try to ensure that local people benefit economically from tourism by employing them as leaders and guides, eating out in local restaurants and using family-run hotels where possible
* We must minimise our impact on the environment by travelling in small groups, offsetting our carbon emissions and reducing waste.
Hope that’s of use. If you want any more info I can put you in touch with Fran Hughes, our RT manager.

Responsible tourism allows you to have a holiday where you do not negatively effect the environment and also put something back into the regions you are visiting.
Thats my understanding anyway

So to get on our exclusive list
Do you donate or allow consumers to donate to environment charities?
It’s just I see RT and donation separate, but it’s a good subject to bring up, and something I’d like to blog more about.
Paul Goodison | 6 June, 2007 at 5:44 pm
We donate as part of our RT programme and we also suggest to customer that its something they might like to do. Not simply environmental charities but a mixture of local charities, international organisations who organise specific programmes in certain areas, environmental, wildlife etc. Its all about trying to make a big impact for a small charity, cause or locality I believe.
Our Charities page shows who we currently donate to.

Hello
I work for The Adventure Company http://www.adventurecompany.co.uk and we have set up our own Foundation which donates to worthwhile charities and causes around the world.
Each customer is asked to donate to the Foundation and recently we have helped to build a community building in Nepal, assisting a school in Ecuador and our current project is helping the Arusha Childrens Trust in Tanzania.
For more information on The Adventure Company Foundation please visit our Foundation page http://www.adventurecompany.co.uk/rt-travel-foundation.aspx
Thanks
