In case it's not too late, here are my thoughts: Downtown Chicago is expensive, esp. when you add in the insane cost of parking a car should you have a rental. I would try an outlying neighborhood that is on the El subway/train lines. Some recommend staying near the airport -- I have now done that and it IS much cheaper, but you are looking at about a 40-60 minute ride into the center of town. Not unbearable, but does add to the length of your day.
