The reason being - hotels are smarter than all of us combined, and they hike the rates around event dates much before you start thinking! To confirm have a look at any hotel website near ExCel for WTM dates. So, better option is to look for adjoining areas and find good hotel deals early i.e. before the crowd spills over from event location hotels. It's a fact esp. for London where the transport is good esp. to ExCel in this case. So, why bother with costly ExCel hotels if you can find something better 1-4 tube stations from ExCel.
