Interesting article in the Daily Express today which quoted that 2.5 million holidaymakers will be leaving the country over Easter for sunnier climates abroad, and that many will be disappointed because the weather in Costa del Sol will be gloomy.

I wonder if the reporter realises that it’s 2007, and we don’t all head to the Costa’s of Spain anymore, and that there’s a big world out there. Travel consumers are adventurous and are taking trips to long haul and unknown destinations.
I paid a quick visit to the Daily Express Travel section, which is badly designed, with annoying popups, very little in the way of content, and not a great deal to inspire me about travelling, just compare this with Guardian, and the Times.
Come on Daily Express; inspire us to travel, not to sit in our back garden.

Perhaps the Express is opting for a green approach to travel, Darren?

Oh, the Daily Express, every travel consumers dream read. Just ask the people who participated in the cruise offer farce.

Perharps, and good point, but is driving a car to a UK holiday destination a green approach?
Kevin May | 2 April, 2007 at 10:44 pm
not sure what causes the worst damage: car or air travel. darren can tell us, i’m sure…
anyway, i only pick up the Express in the office to see the latest twist in the Diana Conspiracy.

Kev, I’d take a wild guess and say cars, but a solution is the Sinclair C5, or maybe walking
Kevin May | 2 April, 2007 at 10:55 pm
I suppose you could walk to the airport, if you were feeling virtuous.
Darren Cronian | 2 April, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Forget walking, I’m off to Fly, I’m taking a trip to Second life for Easter haha
For those that don’t know what Second life is visit this site:

Getting back on-topic.
What’s peoples opinion on the Daily Express travel section?
Kevin May | 2 April, 2007 at 11:09 pm
some readers may find this hard to believe, but the Express travel portal has just recently re-launched.

That’s worrying.
Popups are my No1. hate of internet sites, there’s no need for them.
I didn’t see the site before the redesign so it’s hard to comment really, but I think the design is horrible. The layout is messy, and the font is ugh, and if your going to put ads on a site, make sure the ads are the same niche, not Lidl supermarket.

Pretty poor effort I would say, but what do I know I’m just a holidaymaker.
I prefer the Times site, over Guardian and Express.

OMG!!! Every page you go on to is a popup, how bloody annoying, and its a popup advertising loans!!
Darren Cronian | 3 April, 2007 at 12:50 am
Rohan
Holidaymakers comments count. Your the sites targeted audiance and if you don’t like the site or are getting annoyed by the popups then its an issue. Personally, having a pop up window on every page is bad design, and advertising loans, is not ethical in my opinion.
No wonder we have so many people in debt when it’s been shoved in their face.

I think sites that pretend they are one thing, and have pop ups, advertising off topic drivel should be banned.
There owners taken to the Tower and whipped soundly and made to read travel brochures, that prove we all chase the sunshine in locations not just the bloody Costa del sol

I think that it’s pretty important that ads shown on web pages are in context. I had a quick look at the Express travel site and that’s what a noticed first a flashing Lidl advert in the left hand margin. I recently installed Google Adsense on my travel sites and the ads are pretty good for being in context although I’ve had adverts for makes up and taps and sinks appear. I went for text only ads certainly no pop ups because I think it annoys readers and makes the site look tacky.

Pete, is your site a copy of http://www.cheapholidaydeals.co.uk it looks very similar..
Darren Cronian | 3 April, 2007 at 5:42 pm
Why do you also have a TUI Abta registration on your site?
I’m a little confused, and I think consumers will be too.

Why when you talk about Spain it is always about Costa del Sol? There are a lot of places that you can find even more interesting in this country. I make you a suggestion: Axpe Marzana, a place in the north of Spain where you can enjoy nature and culture far away from your troubles
Here a link where you can discover that beautiful place
