I am visiting Riga in Latvia on the 17 April for 4 nights, and I was searching for hotels, and found a hotel in central Riga for only £14 a night. When I mentioned this to friends and family they were shocked I would pay so little for a hotel, okay.

So I am cheap, but unless I am travelling with a girlfriend, I do not see the point in paying a fortune for a room that I am going to spend very little time in. My criteria when searching for any hotel is that it has to be clean, the room includes a shower and toilet, helpful staff and within easy access to the destinations attractions.
So, are you a cheapo traveller, or a luxury traveller?

When I was younger, I wasn’t bothered on the hotel, aslong as it was tidy, but as I have become older, luxury is becoming more important.

I suppose I am in between Darren, I generally travel off peak to less well known destinations so I can usually find a reasonable hotel at a good price. The Travelodge rooms for £15 if you book three weeks in advance are great value

It’s a trip to Edinburgh for us Darren, leaving on Sunday 01st April for 3 Nights staying at THE MALMAISON. here’s the Hotels own description:
The mother of all Mals, and over a decade later she’s still mighty fine. Just a short taxi ride from Princes Street and across the waters of Leith and you’re home to mama. In her previous lives she’s been a haven for lost seamen, fleeing royals and the less reputable ladies of the night. In this life she attracts the culture vultures, alfresco dinners and socialites with mighty appetites.
Come sundown bar-side, a river of cocktails pour and her soundtrack to the evening goes deep and soulful.
Time for bed says mother. Why not try the haunted turret room or the original Mal room 121.
We are looking forward to our trip as it seems a long time ago since last August when we went to Mauritius on holiday, and we don’t seemed to have stopped working since December ( Which should have been a quiet month for us, but was hectic)
So Darren it’s luxury all the way for us, Huge Malmaison Power showers large enough to get a Rugby team in, Huge King size beds with Egyptian Cotton sheets and Lots of Fine Dining. It’s the only way to travel.
Having said that can thoroughly recommend a Keycamp holiday and Luxury Tent for a holiday as well.

Luxury Tents what will we have next hehe.
The Malmaison sounds very nice, and Edinburgh is a city I am going to have to visit for a long weekend break soon. Maybe, I will go for luxury on this trip, as getting there won’t be expensive.

Karen, wow thats cheap. I was always under the impression that Travel Lodge was expensive. Have bookmarked that link.

Darren, the Travelodges are generally of a fair standard and ideal if you need an overnight on a journey or need somewhere cheap to stay and won’t be in the room much. The rooms sleep up to 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids. I usually take food with me to eat in the room for my breakfast. There’s usually a Little Chef next door but i’m not into fry ups, I take things like croissants, carton of fruit juice, and fruit

Karen, you reminded me of the Holiday Inn Express, where I found out that they didn’t do room service, and the restaurant was limited in how long it was open, it certainly was ‘express’
I spent the whole hungry, and that experience has put me off booking a room with them again - but then I should of followed your advice and taken some food with me, which I will remember next time.
Also, what’s your favourite travel experience?
Karen Bryan | 28 March, 2007 at 6:55 pm
A lot of the Travelodges are at motorway services or industrial estates so there aren’t shop or restaurants close by. However some are in more central locations. Edinburgh Central is close to the Royal Mile, and Harrogate is in the town centre.
The Holiday Inn Express does usually offer a self service continental breakfast which is perfectly OK but room scost from £45 upwards.
Lee. enjoy your weekend in Edinburgh, it is a beautiful city.

I’d have to say luxury, but I did a lot of backpacking and staying in insect infected hostels when I was younger.

Luxury, when travelling with the wife and kids, but medium cost hotels when I am away on business.

Come on Darren: bring back the controversial stuff……….
Darren Cronian | 30 March, 2007 at 12:27 am
Kev, I can’t be controversial all the time! ![]()

maybe you should change the title of the blog then… ![]()

I think I’d agree with you Darren. If I’m going away on my own then I go for the cheap option as it saves you money to spend on other things. When taking my girlfriend however I spend a bit more to make sure I get a really nice place to stay.
Darren Cronian | 30 March, 2007 at 9:42 am
Kev, do you always stick to posts about travel on Travolution?
Darren Cronian | 30 March, 2007 at 9:49 am
Yes, getting back on topic
Kieran, I’m glad someone agrees with me! ![]()
Kevin May | 31 March, 2007 at 7:50 am
Darren: no, not necessarily always about travel… but we do cover digital media, marketing distribution channels and travel, which is what travolution is all about.
