Jumping into my email inbox today are a few rants from readers – each rant mentions how expensive holidays have become because travel operators are so keen on adding extras, which obviously hikes up the price of their holiday.

The dreaded single person supplement [don’t get me started on this subject!] is featured in all of the rants, and the fact that they have to pay an additional £90 on top of what is already costing the consumer over £600.
I suppose I don’t mind paying single person supplement if you are getting a room like everyone else but from my experience, they dump you in a cupboard somewhere in the hotel and hope you don’t complain about the shabby condition.
What’s with these extras too – pay £98 if you want a lake view room or £85 if you want a Mountain View room. You don’t pay these extras but it has to worry you what exactly you’re going to look out on to, if it’s not the mountain or lake.
We won’t then go into the discussion on the extra cost for the holiday because it’s during the school holidays, but a family holiday is an expensive luxury nowadays, and my advice would be not to jump into the first deal you find in the travel agent – shop around.

If you want nice views then nowadays you have to pay for them.
What happened to first come, first served instead?

Rohan, I think holiday pricing is a touchy subject at the moment. Not many travel companies want to talk about it. My advice is shop around. When I went to Kos last October, I had sea views and didn’t pay a penny extra ![]()

You shouldn’t have to pay for views, but that’s the world we live in.

Travel companies don’t like talking about prices, but as customers we have a right mentioning those companies that take advantage.
Name and shame ![]()

Short note that all tour operators have been told to included fuel surcharge in there next brochures basic holiday cost. Also most small operators also included as much as they can in the basic price.
