It seems that Enjoy England read the travel rants blog – I joke, but since my last rant about the lack of promotion of England and the United Kingdom I have seen tons of new television adverts promoting England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It’s about time too.
American’s in particular get excited when they tell me that they have visited England, and when I ask them where they visited, the reply is always London – just London to see the red telephone boxes and the Queen.
I’m a regular reader of Yahoo Answers, and last week I found a question which I just had to reply to “Why does England Suck?” The individual quoted that he thought that England was boring, cold, and the people unfriendly. Unfortunately, Yahoo have removed the question [and my response]
I won’t get into a full blow rant – it is Sunday after all, but why don’t people realise that there’s more to England than just London, and this is why I think it’s important that Enjoy England and Visit Britain spend some money and promote this country abroad.

I have visited England, to date, only twice - and in both cases, was at the mercy of budget constraints and a tour itinerary, so all I mainly got to see was London. If not for the kindness of a friend who took my mother and I on a ramble through the countryside (including a visit to Hampton Court!) we would have been stuck in the City.
Not that I would have complained much; our experience of London was a delightful one. I had fallen in love with the city before I ever set foot in it, which probably helped ramp up the enjoyment factor of the limited time I had to go around.
However, I am determined to go back and do a tour of England, Scotland and Wales the moment the opportunity presents itself. There is so much more to *any* country besides the capital city!

I blogged about an Enjoy England intiative recently, “England Rocks”
http://www.england-rocks.co.uk/
which highlights England’s rock and pop heritage.
I must say I am not a great fan of London. When I’ve been there recently I found it dirty, I was intimitaded by all the beggars and hustlers and thought that accommodation was very overpriced. Although being Scottish may make me biased I would recommend visiting Edinburgh as well as most of the rest of Scotland.

I live in the US (Awesome Blog Darren!!) and I haven’t seen any ads promoting England over here. I had no interest in visiting England, but after viewing your pictures of York, we might be tempted to do some research into a possible trip in 2008.

England is a beautiful country.
I was lucky to visit London for the launch of the Hong Kong to London flight with Oasis Airlines which Darren kindly helped us promote on his blog.

Karl, thank you for your kind comments. I’d recommend a trip to York, Edinburgh and a trip down to London, and maybe Bath. If you need any help researching any destination in the UK drop by and let me know.
Karen Bryan [link above] has a very good UK themed blog so have a read of her blog too.

Annie,
It was a pleasure, I hope it generated some visitors and interest in the launch of the 1st low cost flight from Asia to UK. I know that it was a popular topic of discussion on the blog at the time.
