I’m going to Oslo, Norway in a few weeks time, and I am looking forward to the experience of travelling in Scandinavia. I always worry if I am taking the right amount of spending money, and since I am visiting Norway which is notoriously expensive, I’m worried a little more than usual.

Argh! How much spending money should I take?

I’m going for 4 nights, hotel and flight paid for, airport transfer to organise. Considering it’s going to be cold, I need a good breakfast down me, and then a snack for lunch and a warm evening meal.

At the prices I’ve seen quoted, I won’t be drinking much alcohol at night, and during the day I’ll be visiting a few museums, and getting around on foot [unless I really have to get public transport] so has anyone been to Norway and how do you calculate how much money to take with you on your trips?

Oh, how could I forget to thank Conde Nast Traveller for listing my blog as a ‘Site worth seeing!’ Wow!

Why didn’t you just send me an email Darren? :)

The train that most people use to get to Oslo city is the Airport Express. This goes till very late and is basically based on the airport traffic, so it will certainly be going till at least midnight. It is 160 NOK one way and takes 22 minutes to get you to Oslo Central station. There is also another ‘regular’ train but I’ve never taken it as it usually only goes once an hour. It is cheaper, but also will take a little longer. There is also a bus which takes between 45 minutes and an hour but check if it stops near where you’re headed.

You can catch a bus or tram from central station across the city pretty easily. A one way ticket on these costs 30 NOK (off the top of my head, it might be 5 more or less) and is valid for an hour which also includes most of the taxi boats in the harbour (if they happen to be going when you’re here). A taxi would probably cost about 100 NOK, depending exactly on where you are headed (if it’s close to CS, I’d recommend walking/tramming/bussing if you don’t have much luggage).

Cost of food approximately… McD/Burger King (note I am not suggesting you go here, but they’re good for comparisons sake) is about 70/80 NOK for a big mac meal/whopper meal. Breakfast places can be hard to come by in my experience, so something like a sandwich will most likely have to do. Probably about 100 NOK with coffee etc. Quick, but decent lunch, anywhere between 50 and 100 depending on what you go for (hot dogs are 20 to 30). A decent dinner will probably set you back 100 to 150, excluding drinks. Some of the more popular downtown places (or more expensive foods like sushi etc.) will quickly set you back 200 nok.

Beer will go for 38 to 65 NOK depending where in town you are buying it. 65 in the downtown area on say Carl Johan, but 38 to 48 in my side of downtown (Grunerlokka) which is ten times cooler anyway. Prices for .4 to .5 liter, which is the standard size.

Hope this helps; Oslo is expensive, but it’s a nice city and Norway is a beautiful country! Oh, and I’ll shout you a beer if you let me know when you’re here and I’m around….

Hi Darren, I think Oslo is great — try the Oslo Pass which for a reasonable price gives you a transportation pass and entry into most museums. The Viking Ship, outdoor Folke Museet (even in the snow!) and the Kon-Tiki Museum were highlights for us.

Our hotel had a great breakfast buffet (Best Western Bondenheimen (sp?) so check what yours offers; the breakfast may already be covered. Much to my teenager’s horror, I became quite fond of the pickled herring in tomato sauce.

Dolly Dimples pizza is not too expensive, and at other restaurants, go for any fish dishes — they always seem to be wonderfully fresh.

Have a great time.
