I have to admit that I have a lack of knowledge on climate change and Global Warming, and I need to read more about how tourism is having a negative impact on the environment.

I don’t mind paying more for flights etc. if I knew that the governments increased revenue through passenger duty was going to be used to help the environment, but we know that this isn’t going to be the case.
Every flight you take has an impact on climate change that arises from the carbon dioxide. So as travellers what can we do? For a start you can visit Climatecare.org and calculate how much emission your flight will generate and offset this Carbon Dioxide by donating the money to a worth while project.
For my trip to Oslo, Norway, I’ve off-set £1.98 towards my CO2 and it was easy to do – just calculate your emissions, and pay by Debit or Credit card. The minimum amount you can off-set is £5 so have a think about previous flights you have taken.
Climate Care use the money you have off-set towards projects, including rainforest restoration. For more information on projects being undertaken visit the Climate care website.

Good post Darren. There’s actually quite a few more sites where you can offset your emissions, although Climate Care is the most known. Interestingly enough, they all seem to use a different calculation for the amount of CO2 and price. Keep in mind also that Climate Care is one of the few companies that do this that aren’t ‘non profit’ (might be why they manage to get their name out more…). 10% of all fees paid goes straight to a for profit company as far as I can see (so in reality you have to pay an extra 10% here to get the same offset). That said, they seem professional.
There’s often very good providers on a national level too, so I’d recommend looking around a bit before choosing one.

Thanks Sam.
Do you have any links to other sites travellers could use to offset CO2? I want to get more involved in enviromental issues for tourism, as I have very little knowledge on such issues.

Sure, just click on my name in the last post (or this one for that matter
).

Unfortunately, we take things for granted.
I’d rather pay towards an environment project than the damn APD!

Does the vast majority of people travelling by plane actually care about the environment?
