For whatever reason, Travel Blogs have been slow to take off in the UK, compared to our friends, in the United States. That is changing though, and it’s been a tough decision to choose my top travel blogs for 2006, with over 40 RSS feeds on my reader.

Here’s my favourite travel blogs for 2006
10. Blog Carnival
9. Alex’s Travel & Photo Blog
Alex’s travel blog is always full with images and useful content about destinations across the World. Jaunted, is a very well designed blog, full of useful travel news and events, and it’s a regular read, so that I can keep up to date with what’s going on in the travel industry across the World.
8, Jaunted
7. Travel Gear & Gadgets Blog
6. Gadling Travellers Blog
5. Wandalust UK Blog
4. Backpackers Blog
Select World Travel have produced an excellent blog, which includes their own videos, Flickr photograph album and a blog full to the top with content. This is an example of the type of web promotion that independent travel agents should be following to ensure that they are keeping up with the ‘big boys!’
3. Select World Travel Blog
2. Travolution Blog
A close contest - the Travolution Blog, written by Kevin May – is full of travel content, including news, reports from travel conferences and is a must read for any travel professional. I have learnt more off Travolution than any travel publication or blog that I have read this year – if it had been for Annie’s Underground blog, Travolution would of certainly hit that No1 spot!
My favourite blog of the year – why? It’s personal, well written, very humorous, and really gives you an idea of what it would be like to work on the London Underground. The blog is very informative, and Annie writes a great story to keep you hooked, and coming back week, after week.

pipped to the top spot by a blog about the Tube. what a disgrace!!! haha…
i’d have felt better about it if i hadn’t had such a shocking journey into work today…ON THE TUBE!!
nice list though, Rants - we’re very happy to be included amongst such luminaries.

Jaunted is a great site, but I am not sure that it is a blog.

rohan: i think it is a blog, but just a very messy looking one. i suspect the content is what gets it the plaudits, rather than design. bit like popbitch…

I dunno that they’re slow to take off, rather, that they’re subbed out under big bloggy networks like Boots n All or Lonely Planet or Travelblog or or or… also, there is, maybe, by nature, a lifespan to a travel blog. Even the round the world travelers end up at home and then, what happens to their blog?
Then there’s the question of travel industry blogs, of which there are plenty, blogs about hotels or the Gadling style blogs that mention destinations - those are for people planning travels rather than written by travelers themselves.
I find that the most enduring ones are blogs by travel writers, a whole OTHER sector - those folks do some of the most interesting blogging (for me).
For what it’s worth and all that.

So Pam, what category do you think the Travel Rants Blog comes under? ![]()
