Retired traveller, Clive Atkins emailed me today, to ask for my comments on Ryanair’s recent baggage allowance change, and I’m sat here looking at this issue from both sides - for us travellers, 15kgs isn’t too helpful if your travelling for a few weeks, and want to take along a few books, iPod, and a few pairs of shoes, along with your clothes etc.

Looking at this issue from Ryanair’s perspective, you are buying a low cost airline ticket, on a no frills service, so if you want the extra frills of higher baggage allowance, then you have the option of booking with another airline or, paying for the additional baggage with Ryanair.
On a recent visit to Kos, with My Travel, my case weighed 13kgs leaving Manchester and returning it had increased to 18kgs, just 2kgs away from the My Travel baggage allowance. In February, I am going to Norway, with Ryanair, and it’ll be minus 9 at night, so clothes will certainly be required.
Rather than taking the bulky suitcase, I am going to take a backpack, which will be much lighter, but will hold less volume, so the iPod, laptop, and other travel gadgets will have to stay at home, and I’ll be travelling light for 4 nights in Oslo.

I recently moved (for a year to Hungary). I was nearly 2x over my baggage allowance with British Airways. Did they charge me? Nope! Thats why it was worth paying another £40 or so to fly with them!

Your right Alastair, its best to pay extra if you want the extra frills. I remember a friend saying that he would rather fly and pay the extra with BA and have the frills, than have the no frills.
Everyone is different I suppose, but you have to realise, what you pay is what you get - I’ve never seen a truer quote when it comes down to no frill airlines.

I agree in part with your post, but some of the text I find misleading ! This is not aimed as a criticsm and hope it is not taken that way. Travel is a favourite pastime of mine and I am passionate about it. !!

Brian,
Maybe you could tell me what you find misleading about this blog post?
Or did you post your comment to advertise your site?
