I want to be able to speak the local lingo when I am on my travels – I try and speak the language, even if it’s just hello, thank you and goodbye. I’d want to travel to China, but the language barrier for a solo traveller is worrying me some what.

Whilst I’d love to learn Chinese, Spanish or Greek, I simply don’t have the time – that could change though because, today, I received an email from Earworms Learning, who have created the Musical Brain Trainer which uses music in a unique way, leaving travellers with all the vocabulary and grammar they need to communicate with the locals.
You can buy the Musical Brain Trainer on CD or download it from on iTunes.com where they are recently tipped to be the US number 1 spot in all audio-books, seeing off best sellers such as ‘The Da Vinci code” and “Brokeback Mountain”
What a great idea – I can now listen to the course on my iPod whilst on the move, it’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t have the time to sit down and learn a language in a class. The new Earworms courses are available at Earworms Learning or in the UK bookshops including the large chains such as Borders and Waterstones.

“Essential Chinese 1500″ is a good book for travellers to look up the words and sentences you want to say. I love it, and you will too.

This sounds like an interesting piece of software and is another example of how useful technology can be in learning… particularly in terms of language learning where repetition plays such an important part.
Scientists have often liked musical ability to language learning capability. In terms of my own experience, I have taught Spanish and one of the key tools in helping to teach children is through the use of music and song. Consequently, it seems entirely possible to me that the earworms programme would work in the way its makers claim.
