Thinking back to when I was a student (yes, all them years ago) – I never travelled abroad, simply because it was too expensive. Nowadays, Students have a host of low cost airlines to choose from, with the likes of EasyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com flying to destinations all over Europe.

Hotels or B&B’s are notoriously expensive in many European cities. If you’re travelling solo or with a few friends, accommodation can be expensive, but it is worth checking out backpacker and hostel accommodation, as an alternative.
Another alternative is a villa – what – a villa, yes; one of the advantages of booking a villa over a hostel is that you pay for the villa, and not per person. You could rent a villa in Spain with six friends, and divide the cost between the six of you for the week.
The downside of renting a villa is that your not travel bonded with the likes of ABTA, so if there was a problem on your holiday, you would have to deal with the situation (and cost) yourself.
With any holiday though, provided that you have booked adequate student travel insurance and have a European Health Insurance Card, you will be covered for medical costs and loss of luggage etc.
Whilst I am not suggesting you accost a stranger in the street and request a few nights sleep on his or hers sofa, they are sites where you can do just that. Couchsurfing.com allows you to search for individuals who are offering their sofa to travellers - great idea, and no my sofa is not for rent!
