The small fishing village of Mastichari is a hidden gem, and just ten minutes drive from the airport, on the beautiful island of Kos. The resort is perfect if you want to relax and unwind with its beachfront restaurants, bars and tourist shops – the Greek people are exceptionally friendly, and want to make sure that your stay is memorable.

If your expecting clubs and a wild nightlife then you’ll be disappointed - what you will find in Mastichari are small bars, where you can drink an ice cold Mythos beer or shot of Ouzo and watch the sunset. Then relax eating the local Greek cuisine at one of the many restaurants.

During my stay, I lodged in the Christina Apartments, literally five minutes walk from the beach, bus stop and harbour. The apartment was clean, and featured a shower room, kitchen with small dining area, two twin beds, with plenty of storage space – the balcony, had pleasant views of pine trees, plantations and the island of Kalymnos in the background.

The beach is just perfect – and actually one of the nicest beaches on the Island. I spent a lot of time on the beach listening to music on my iPod, reading, and it was great not having to fight for a sun lounger on the beach.

I found two Greek restaurants, with excellent food, superb service, and friendly waiters, who made you feel welcome and at ease - I quickly found myself getting into a routine, waking up at 8am, taking a walk along the beach, going back to the apartment, and taking a shower – then on for breakfast at Kali Kardia Taverna to plan the day ahead.

In the evening, I’d go the Horizon bar, have a few ice cold Mythos beers, and then head to the Tasty Palace, a beachfront restaurant, which served the nicest Greek and International food (the best pepper steak I have ever tasted!) on the Island. After dinner, I would take a walk to the Kali Kardia for a few drinks, before taking a slow walk (crawling) back to the apartment.

Mastichari has a fairly regular bus service - take a scenic bus ride to the quaint hillside town of Kefalas, or cosmopolitan Kos town, and explore the island, or you can visit the local travel agent where you can book day-trips, hire a car, or rent a bike, scooter or quad bike.

From the harbour you can take a ferry to the island of Kalymnos, that takes around thirty minutes, and costs only €3.00 single fare, which is excellent value for money. The island is home to sponge divers, fisherman and just perfect if you want to snorkel (which I did) or take a walk up to the caves, and churches on the hillside.

I’ve fallen in love with Mastichari, and what I love is that it’s not a built up tourist resort - let’s hope they keep it that way because any major developments would spoil the landscape and this picturesque fishing village, which has great links to the rest of the island.

I am glad you had such a wonderful time darren, you see us Travel Agents do have our benefits sometimes.
Here’s your original Post.
Your services are required - I want to get a weeks break from 14 - 21 October 2006, I am flexible with the days, providing it doesn’t move towards the school holidays which I believe, is the week after. I will be travelling by myself (yes, I know I’m billy no mates) and I am not bothered where.

Now the tricky criteria:

- Under £250 for flight and room only or B&B accommodation
- Walking distance to the beach
- Sunny weather
- Ideally no single room suppliment
- Ideally airport transport included (not fussed about plane food)
- Interesting places to visit - sights, and attractions
- Where speaking English isn’t going to be a problem
- 2 to 4 hours flight time

I want the type of holiday where I can sit on the beach, with a book and my iPod, and relax on an evening in a bar with a cold beer (or two) - basically I want to unwind. Would it be best to wait nearer the time or book something now - do you have any suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like we came up with the exact Criteria you were looking for, and all it took was a two minute posting on travel-rants compared to hours and Hours of trawling the internet.

I Wonder would you have found your paradise Holiday on the Internet? At Select World Travel we firmly believe in trying to matchthe Right destination and resort to that person or family, We’re not perfect and the World’s a massive Place, So we’re glad you enjoyed Mastichari so much.
Did you meet Tony and Maria at the Kali Kardia, Or Ilios the Travel Agent. I hope they remembered us?

[...] I’ve been on some great trips this year, visiting the Lake District, Prague, Paris and the Greek Island of Kos. I’m working my way through a list of destinations that I just have to visit before I’m 40! I’ll be 34 (I know I don’t look it!) in February 2007, so only six more years to go, and over 20 destinations on my list. [...]

Can’t really add to that other than the choice of eating places -it’s all down to personal taste ! Stayed in Karadonis - it hits all the spots!
Mastichari is superb - gives you all the options without the tattooed beer monsters. A totally great place to unwind - and if it gets too popular, I haven’t got a clue where else to run!
Pity - on a package tour - that it’s only Manos that goes into Mastichari - since the take-over by MyTravel the choice has diminished and the cost has gone through the roof, metaphorically speaking. A bit of competition wouldn’t go amiss, just to keep them on their toes !

Hi Dave,

I want to go back there this year, but they are so many places I want to visit. Maybe in a few years when I have got the travelling bug out of my system that I might start to visit Mastichari more often.

It’s a shame about the cost, I am sure Lee, who works for Select World Travel could shed more light on this. I did notice that Christine who runs the Tasty Palace has apartments for rent.

I might be tempted to look for a flight and book an apartment there. It would be a great location as the apartments overlook the beach and sea.

I guess we’re fortunate in my having been all over the world since the sixties - I’d love to return to some ( and miss others by half a continent or so) - but Greece ticks all my boxes.
We’re using our holidays to spot our eventual “place to live” when I can afford to pack in work and decamp to Greece permanently.
Mastichari was always on our “must return” conversational list - and Kos is pretty good all round, too. It’s not all “Kardamena and chips”!
But Mastichari - great to unwind, friendly people, access to Kalymnos, Bodrum ( a great day out for both purchasers of copy designer stuff (that will fall apart on the first wash!) and culture vultures to compare the differences (and certain similarities) of Greek life and Turkish life combined with an excellent museum in the castle), watching the sun set over Kalymnos with the obligatory cold Mythos/Heineken prior to excellent food!
And no tattooed beer monsters looking for John Smiths and a “good karaoke” - now there’s an oxymoron - “good karaoke” !
Just friendly, hospitable Greek people well versed in the phiosophy of “filoxenia”.

Having been to mastihari on several occasions. we have tried most of the eateries and found to our taste and my palate the tasty palace is the best as the accomodate the fussy eaters like me. The appartments adjacent to the resturant are cleaned every day beds changed every other day and the owner is really pleasant are all of the family. we have staed at maria parvaki.s rooms again lovely and clean and the family are really nice to stay with. if we cant get te tasty palace accomodation we stay with them. We are of to get our mastihari fix in june this year(08) , the comment about no tattooed beer monster is very apt for mastihari. ( long may it continue)
