The world of airport security has gone crazy with reports that research is underway to introduce the electronic tagging of passengers at airports. The prototype technology is to be tested at an airport in Hungary, and could, if successful, become a reality in two years.

Fly with us … and be tagged like a criminal

The tagging project, known as Optag means that each passenger will be issued with a tag at check-in and a reader would detect where the passengers were located within the airport. The project will also be investigating a range of other airport security tools to help detect terrorism.

I realise that it is important to ensure safety within airports, but tagging people like we are criminals, is in my opinion not the right way to go about it. It seems a flawed idea anyway, because what happens if you loose your tag – are you going to be delayed from getting on the plane to be re-tagged? Crazy I tell you.

This is too much like Big Brother to be comfortable.

Personally I think people who do not arrive at the gate in time, should not only miss the flight, but should be fined substantially if this causes the plane to miss its take-off slot.

Exceptions should be made for illness, or the like, but it is up to passengers to take responsibility for getting to the gate on time. If we don’t want to be treated like babies (or criminals) then we should act responsibly - which is what most people do. We’ve all seen people sitting in the bar, drinking until the last minute, and hoped they wouldn’t be sitting next to us on the plane.
