On the Travel Rants forums, Sarah from i-to-i.com started a post about unusual UK & Ireland town names, and I’d not noticed how many unusual or funny town names they were around here - just goes to show you that the English and Irish have a sense of humour, and we aren’t really stuffy Brits, or Whinging poms!

My favourites are Booby Dingle (Herefordshire), North Piddle (Worcester), Hackballscross (Drogheda) and Dumpton (Kent). I’d like to hear of unusual names where you live - email me your photographs of you stood next a sign welcoming you into the town.

I always thought that the Island in the Maldives called ” Sonevafushi” would make a great swear word

Sorry to lower the tone but there is Penistone somewhere in Lancashire I think it is. You pronounce it Penn-is-ton. But you can make mistakes!

Oh Colin, naughty! hehe Yes, I have heard of Penistone, and we have a hock lane, and some bright young man has changed the h to another letter of the alphabet.

I’m assured that Slaithwaite near Huddersfield is pronounced Slaw-it by locals too!
Wetwang (East Riding of Yorkshire) is also a good name.
