I’m on a roll with the blog entries this weekend – quite ironic that I said on Friday, that I was going to take a break from blogging this weekend. Anyway, did anyone watch ‘Beyond Boundaries’ on BBC2 on Sunday night?

Basically, eleven disabled people are embarking on the trip of a lifetime – a month long trek across the four ecosystems of Africa. So much courage and determination. Working as a team is going to be the most difficult challenge for the group to over come.
I’m hooked. If you didn’t watch the show, then you can watch it via the Beyond Boundaries BBC website, or you can read more about the programme and the challenges ahead for these brave individuals. It is on every Sunday at 9pm GMT.

Hi Darren,
I missed this programme but saw a similar one last year where about 10 people with various disabilities ranging for double-amputees to the profoundly deaf treked across the width of South America. That was a brilliant series too. I’m setting the Sky Box now to make sure I see the rest of the series and also I’m going to visit the BBC website.
Thanks for pointing this out!

I love programmes like this – they are very thought provoking. They are all very independent people, and you could see this in the programme, because they found it hard to work as a group (to the extent of being selfish) in the first week.

Darren,
I saw this and I found it very moving. As someone with a disability I know how hard it is to do “ordinary things” so this really has blown me away. Can’t wait to see the next programme.

Carol, I’m really looking forward to the next programme – finally something interesting on the television on a Sunday evening.

Im so annoyed because I had plans to watch this programme, but family came around, and I never got to see it. Thanks for linking to the BBC site Darren, I will hopefully be able to catch up.

Did you watch it last night Darren?

Glad you found, at least the first one, good.
As you can see, if you’ve watched the rest, the team never really gelled and became increasingly more divided.
However, it’s good to remember that the team were never able to train together before leaving, which I’m sure had an impact on their ability to function as a team. The expedition was never treated as an expedition, it was always a TV programme. No prep, no conditioning, nothing. The situations the team found themselves were extreme. Not just the climate and landscape, but the hunger the tiredness and the pain all had a very real impact on their performance.
Darren, you make a really good point about independance and the consequence of that state of mind being the difficulty to function as a team. I feel that you are absolutely right.
As a last thought, remember it’s TV, most of it is sensationalised and not everyone is shown in their true light.
