The cost of telephone calls within the UK has decreased considerably in recent years with the introduction of Voice over Internet Protocol services from companies like Skype, but what about travellers, who are paying a fortune out on mobile phone or hotel call charges.

Skype your way around the World

Travellers are starting to realise the potential of Skype for their travels – pack in your backpack or suitcase a headset and you now have options to avoid the high costs of staying in touch while away from home.

With just a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, travellers can call anywhere for free with Skype software that enables worldwide voice and video calls at no cost. Internet cafes and hotel computer centres are common, making free calls with Skype is almost effortless.

More hotels are starting to integrate Skype into their Internet centres because they realise that travellers are no longer prepared to pay costly roaming charges. The Marriott Hotel in Rome, is an example of a hotel chain that sees the advantage of offering Skype to it’s visitors.

Costs of mobile phone bills abroad are outrageous, with both parties having to pay for the call – Skype offers something different, and if you can fit in a web camera into your baggage, you can keep in touch with family and friends via video as well – technology really has changed how the modern traveller travels.

Yes, I use Skype whenever I travel on my PC laptop. As long as there’s a wifi connection it works wonders–calling from Prague back to NYC from some little cafe, with video and all!

Kevin, is that the link to the story about Skype wanting a large travel company or distributer to improve their product in travel. I’ve made a comment there, and linked back to this blog entry.

Ezekial, that’s great - I love the idea of calling home from a tourist attraction, using a laptop and WIFI, unfortunately though the take up on WIFI is not that great, and I’ve only used WIFI once in a hotel in London, where the cost was astronomical.

Ive just had a Skype chat with Darren and I am in the Best Western hotel in Ontario, Canada! Love the blog, which I found by accident, whilst looking for a skype friendly hotel on Google.
