I suppose many see holiday rental sites more as advertising holiday homes for rent, rather than a traditional holiday business. A lot of the contact is between the owner and the holidaymaker, and the t&c's have to clearly state this. Re. my dad's predicament, I think that getting a refund off a flight is near nigh impossible, would you all agree? Some ATOL and ABTA-bonded packages allow for cancellation ahead of dates. It's an extremely murky area of the business - made worse by the invention of the internet, ironically. web-based companies, that do not have a traditional high street presence, feel they do not need to become members of a traditional regulator/industry body. Holiday homeowners should have their own terms and conditions, and you will find that some owners are sympathetic, and return the deposit, but some would keep the deposit. Thanks Mikey :)

In May my father in-law died in road accident the day before we were all due to go on holiday to the Cotswolds together, our first with our new baby boy. We booked and paid for a week in a cottage through Blakes online. Of course we had to cancel and when we told them of the news they were very sympathetic and sensitive to our situation. Luckily, their terms allowed for us to receive a full refund minus £35 admin costs. They dealt with the situation superbly and professionally. Not to mention swiftly. I'm not sure we would've got that sort of service if we booked through those direct with owners type sites. Sad to hear that Darren.
