I’ve mentioned in a few recent blog entries about how technology has changed the travel industry, well thanks to Google, web developers can now integrate Google Maps technology within travel websites, through the Google Map API.

I have had a little play around with this technology tonight, and in a short period of time, I could insert a map (I love the satellite option) in a web page, by following the guidance in the Google API online manual - this is just a very basic example.
Paul Johnson, informs me that his UKseries.com network of sites which includes UK Hotel, have integrated Google Map, and I have to say, with some very impressive results.
This technology enables them to produce maps not just of an individual hotel, but also the whereabouts of other nearby hotels or other forms of accommodation, tourist attractions, and so on, and to show how they all relate to each other geographically.
Paul says “We currently have in excess of 24,500 points plotted across the whole of the UK, each one being clickable and taking the user to a page with further information and a photograph. So next time you’re travelling in the UK, give it a whirl - it could save you a lot of planning.”
Another example of how technology is changing how we plan and book our holiday.

Hi Darren
Thanks for the mention… I agree that the satellite option is a great little add-on, particularly for the cities where greater detail seems to be there. Once we have that detail UK-wide, or perhaps even more detail, or footage in real time (now that would be impressive!), then it’ll be more amazing still.
Hats off to Google on this one… once more they seem to be a steap ahead of the rest.

No problem Paul.
This is exciting technology, and you’ve done a superb job at integrating this. I’ve been playing around with this for a few hours, it’s becoming quite addictive! I know I’m a nerd
Anyway, travel rants guests can now add their home city, and mention a few words about the city and see it appear on the Travel Guest Map
