For the last five years, my parents have gone on holiday to the Sunshine state of Florida, USA and I am trying to persuade them to visit another Country, and see new sights, and spend time away from Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the Disney characters.

Bear the following in mind that they visit Florida primarily for the following reasons:

- they like the sun
- the theme parks
- relaxing on the beach
- cheap shopping
- cheap eating out
- they occasionally take my 10yr old nephew
- they don’t want to fly for more than 6 or 7 hours

So where would you send my parents?

Goa, India is good place if they like to be at the beach. Sydney, Australia is another place they might enjoy. Your 10 yr old nephew would love the Wonderland, a pretty decent theme park. It also has a zoo next to it, where one can pet knagaroos and feed them. Although I haven’t been there in the last 6 yrs and don’t know how much has changed. Also they could visit Melbourne or Brisbane too. All wonderful places.

Goa, sounds like a very nice place - but what is there to do other than lay on the beach allday? I’m not sure my dad will like the food neither. Australia was suggested, but its 24 hours flight, unless you stop off en-route, but its still 11 hours flight to Malaysia, which is where I had a stopover.

I got it, I got it.

Check out the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. They can do nice beaches/sun/fun in Virginia Beach, nautical things/shopping/culture in Norfolk, fun American colonial history in nearby Jamestown and Williamsburg, then theme park fun at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

Here’s the tourist Web site: http://www.visithamptonroads.com/

I’m a genius! (Also used to live there; it’s a nice area.)

Thanks, Sheila

Sheila - good option, but how would they get to Virginia from the UK? I’ve had a quick look and I couldn’t see any airlines flying to there, so I think that would be a problem if they had to fly and then take a bus or internal flight.

Well, OK, they’d have to change planes in New York or Washington DC to catch a flight down to the Norfolk airport (would be a nice short flight from DC.)

Guess that doesn’t meet the “fly no more than 6-7 hours” requirement. Hmm. There goes the genius idea….:)

How about splitting between Disneyland Paris, and a beach resort in Brittany? Or they could stay on the outskirts of Salou and do Port Aventura. The theme park is supposed to be excellent, and the outskirts of Salou are supposed to be much nicer than the town itself.

Or, there are plenty of nice beaches within a short drive of Benidorm. They could stay somewhere say within half hours drive. The themepark and water park are right next to each other in Benidorm, and they are very good.

You do have a point. There is little else to do other than relax on the beach in Goa. Although it has been ages since I visited India and things might have changed a lot. The food I think shouldn’t be a problem as I hear that many five star hotels in India cater to a wide variety of palates.
Australia is something you could really consider. I do agree though that its a long flight. But once they visit, I think they will love it. They could also plan to do some sightseeing in Malaysia or Singapore during their transit. I hear both are wonderful places to visit.

Catherine, some very good suggestions there - I like the idea of Disneyland Paris, and then on to a French seaside destination. Maybe down to the South of France for some sun after a week in Disneyland and Paris.

Travel Plaza, I have mentioned Australia, and I think my nephew would love to go there, but it is 24 hours flight and that is too long for my parents who don’t particularly like travelling by plane anyway!
