A number of irate readers recently wrote to the editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post complaining about the cost of holidays outside of the school term. I wrote to the editor of the newspaper, to add fuel to the debate that accommodation prices very rarely increase because of the school holidays, and what does increase are the flight prices.

Help Reduce flight prices for families

To compare I visited jet2.com and did a search on a flight from Leeds & Bradford airport to Alicante for 2 adults and child for a week commencing the 18th February and 4th March, and I was shocked to see that the prices were so wide off the mark.

The price of a return flight to Alicante from Leeds & Bradford is £382.00 for a week commencing 4 March compared to £682.00 for a week commencing 18 February. If we can get the airlines to reduce ticket prices during school holidays, it’ll considerably reduce the cost of holidays for families with children.

Taking your child out of school for the week in March would save a family £300! The accommodation providers in general go on the season, or if the holiday falls on a bank holiday, so the only way we are going to reduce the cost of a holiday, is to get the airlines to reduce the cost of a flight during the school break.

So this is YOUR opportunity to complain about the price of flights during the school holidays – please enter your full name, city, and country where you reside, and have a good old rant!! When we have a good number of names on the list, we’ll contact local MP’s and airlines to see what we can do for families!

Without predjustice.
Reading your rant does not suprise me in the slightest.Jet2 who state they do not use agents therefore to reduce flight costs is a joke. For example go to the Thomas Cook powered website In2sun.com (Intasun!!! remember them) where I priced a tailor made holiday & Thomas Cook overpriced me £106.00 for flights (I compared them to Jet2 prices on the website ie same flight, date etc) to my destination just for the pleasure of booking with them. This obviously means that Jet2 are aware thet tour operators are using these low cost airlines for their own profit & Jet2 are allowing them to do so. So what is the chance of any of the holiday industry reducing holiday prices during school holidays? Answer NIL.
Why are Thomas Cook not advertising this year & have closed Thomas Cook TV maybe its because they are abusing us while whilst also abusing Jet2 who as long as they get their monet probably are not bothered.

Good luck

Wow, great points Caitlin!! I had not realised that Jet2.com were allowing travel agents to book their flights, especially, when they have http://www.flythomascook.com, who beyond my amazement are charging £2.99 for a holiday guide – what happened to travel agents providing information on holiday destinations for FREE?! Good Rant Caitlin, hope to see you back soon!

Hi Guys
Has a Manager of a small independent travel agent I can see exactly where Caitlin is coming from regarding these issues. Most of the big 4 tour operators are exremely guilty regarding upping holiday costs during school holidays & will continue to get away with this until the public actually say “no more” Will this happen? I doubt it.
With regards to Caitlin’s rant with Jet2 & Thomas Cook I again totally agree with her.As a travel agent we are more & more being squeezed from our commissions & pressured into selling more of their holidays, from the tour operator (especially Thomas Cook)& we are unable to sell tailored made holidays.
Now after checking on int2suns site I am totally flabbergasted that after not letting the independent travel agent do this they are indeed doing this themselves with total contempt for the holidaymaker & what is worse is that Jet2 are letting them do this.Hopefully the paying public will see this & see it for what it is.All these budget airlines on the surface say they are totally customer focused giving cheap flights whilst the big tour operators are profit focused & selling budet flights at a massive profit. My conclusion is that they all pee in the same pot & hopefully soon this will come out into the open.
ABTA???? Abolutely no backbone

I end my rant

S.P.
