The average British holidaymaker will travel 248,000 miles during their lifetime - enough to go around the world ten times.

People are also becoming increasingly adventurous about the destinations they visit on holiday, with 89 per cent of travellers going to a new country every time they leave the UK, according to Halifax Travel Insurance.

But despite this, France remains the most popular holiday destination for Britons, with 83 per cent of people having visited the country, followed by Spain at 77 per cent. The USA is the third most-visited country for people in the UK, with Italy and Greece making up the rest of the top five.

But while European destinations dominate the top 20 most-visited countries, Canada, Australia, Tunisia, Thailand and Malaysia also make it on to the list. Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, Egypt, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, India and Jamaica are all in the top 30.

Young people are the most frequent travellers, with nearly half of those aged between 18 and 20 taking an average of three trips a year.

The under-20s are more likely to visit North America and Asia than any other age group, and 14 per cent of people under 20 have already visited 25 countries, while more than two-fifths plan to visit at least 30 during their lifetime.

People in their 50s also take a lot of breaks, with nearly a third of people in this age group making at least three trips a year. They also tend to favour exotic destinations such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
